DRAWING AND COMPOSITION
Catalog Description:
2B – Drawing and Composition
3 units
Development of knowledge and skills introduced in Art 2A, emphasizing media and composition
and realism drawing at an intermediate level. Introducing the use of color. Prerequisite: Art 2A
(completed with a grade of “C” or higher). 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio.
[Typical contact hours: lecture 35, studio 70]
Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course the student should be able to:

demonstrate the skill of hand and eye coordination in realism drawing;
organize a well-composed composition that reflects the basic elements;
use balance and rhythm and negative and positive space to achieve unity and variety;
create the illusion of three-dimensional form and space on a two-dimensional surface in black
and white media;
5. use the medium of graphite pencil, pastel and ink.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

discuss characteristics of a variety of modes of visual representation and composition;
correctly articulate color theory and pictorial uses of color in drawing;
demonstrate skill in using graphite and pastel at an intermediate level;

d. linear perspective and light logic
e. surface characteristics

3. Introduction to color theory
a. hue, value and intensity
b. primary hues and complementary effects
c. tints, tones and shades
d. color schemes
4. Discuss composition theory
a. composition in values only and in color
b. distinction between two-dimensional and illusionistic three-dimensional compositions
c. compositions based upon shape and color relations
5. Media and materials
a. graphite pencil, color pastels and water color pencils
b. drawing papers
