CHABOT COLLEGE Curriculum Committee Minutes September 11, 2007 Members Present: Jaswinder Bhangal, Dmitriy Kalyagin, Michael Langdon, Jim Matthews, Wayne Pitcher, Patricia Shannon Ex-Officio Members Present: Jane Church, Edna Danaher, Kaaren Krueg, Ron Taylor Guests: I. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by Jim Matthews, substituting for committee chair Norberto Ruiz. II. Approval of Minutes of September 4, 2007 MSC (Pitcher/Langdon) to approve the minutes of September 4, 2007, as presented. III. A.S. Degree GE Pattern A draft incorporating the Program-Based GE Requirement into the A.S. Degree in Automotive Technology was distributed. Members made suggestions on how the information could best be presented on a degree page. A revised page will be produced based on the suggestions. There was also discussion on how dual degrees, such as Mathematics, which can be taken as either an A.A. or an A.S., with differences only in the graduation GE requirements, might be handled. Ron Taylor suggested doing a draft of how a program page for this situation might look. There was discussion on other aspects of the program page, such as the use of “total” and “total minimum units required.” Jim suggested that members discuss the program page format with their faculty and bring ideas back to a future meeting. A draft was distributed showing how the areas of Wellness (Areas of Health or Physical Education) and Program-Based General Education Requirement might look on the catalog’s Graduation Requirements for the Degree of Associate in Science page (page19) and on various fliers. IV. New Title 5 Regulations Jim initiated a discussion on the requirement that the “course outline of record shall specify the number of contact hours normally required for a student to complete the course…” There was discussion on how the number is calculated. It is the number of lecture hours per week plus the number of lab hours per week multiplied by 16 weeks. Ron cautioned that when members discuss this with colleagues they should stress that it is not the same as instructor duty hours. Jane commented that when the Articulation Office enters courses into OSCAR they are required to enter this information. Curriculum Committee 9-18-07, page 2 Dmitriy Kalyagin asked whether the changes must be made all at once or phased in as other changes to outlines are made. Consensus was that the changes must be made now. MSC (Pitcher/Kalyagin) that the contact hour should be calculated for all courses, and divisions should grant Academic Services the authority to insert the information into the course outlines of record. Academic Services will route the revised outlines back to the divisions (electronically) for dissemination to the faculty. Jim will ask Dave Fouquet to provide Academic Services a list of contact hours calculated for various combinations of lecture and laboratory. V. VI. Faculty Representative to District Curriculum Council District Curriculum Council needs a faculty representative to attend meetings on the first Friday of the month from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Patricia Shannon expressed a willingness to attend the meetings. She was approved by consensus. Other Title 5 Changes Ron commented that most of the Title 5 changes (other than the student contact hour information discussed above) are not specific to individual courses, but rather, affect academic regulations as a whole. He requested that the committee review the changes and make acceptance official via a motion written into the minutes of a future meeting. He added that some of the changes may require revisions to district policy, which will require Board action. Where there are discrepancies between Title 5 and our catalog, changes will need to be made. Academic services can make those revisions. Jane commented that we should talk with the District Curriculum Council so that they can align responses to the Title 5 changes between Chabot and Las Positas. Patricia stated that we need a version of the Title 5 document that includes only the italicized language. VI. Good of the Order Jane described Cabrillo’s Academic Council, which makes recommendations on matters which affect the academic standards of the college, including consideration of admission, grading, graduation, and course transfer issues. She thinks it might be valuable to include some of these aspects in our committee’s work. VII. VIII. Next Meeting: September 18, 2007. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. kk 9/11/07 c:\documents\word\curric\2007-2008\9-11-07.min.doc
