Curriculum and Title V Review
Patricia Shannon distributed The Course Outline of Record: A Curriculum Reference
Guide, published by the State Academic Senate and included in the information provided
at this year’s Curriculum Institute. Please read the document in preparation for
acting on this year’s curriculum proposals.
Patricia called attention to the Elements that Apply to Credit Courses section (beginning
on Page 14) and asked members which items they found most problematic.

Textbooks (page 34)
o Is “none” an acceptable notation for Typical Textbooks?
o As the committee finds outlines stating “textbooks: none” we will flag those
courses and ask for a sentence on the Rationale Page justifying the lack of a
textbook.
o Deans should be sure that adjuncts know what textbooks or materials are to
be used in each class that they teach.

Full Review by the Curriculum Committee (Page 53)
o Distance Education: Does the Committee on Online Learning review meet
the criteria for full review “by the complete curriculum committee” for
“change in modality?”
o Hilal asked for more information on what is considered a “highly
compressed time frame.”

Catalog Description
o Lengthy discussion on the last bullet, “Field trip potential or other
requirements that may impose a logistical or fiscal burden upon the students
should be included along with an option for alternatives.” Some of this
information is included in the Special Student Materials section and the
Schedule of Classes, but not necessarily in the Catalog Description.


Objectives (Page 21)
Should be tied to Content

Content (Page 25)
o Jane commented that it is not necessary to duplicate the Table of Contents in
the course content. It makes for very large outlines.
o Patricia stated that we should see flags if the content is too brief (less than
½ page), or too detailed (more than 1½ pages).

Curriculum Review (Page 53)
This is the information Patricia promised to provide.
Patricia reiterated her request to read the document in preparation for acting on
this year’s curriculum proposals.
In a discussion on the need to provide assistance to faculty who are developing
curriculum, it was noted that there used to be a Language Arts Curriculum Subcommittee
that reviewed all proposals before they came forward to the College Curriculum
Committee. It was unclear if that subcommittee is still active.
Patricia commented on the clarity of the handout. She would like to use it as a basis for
a revised Curriculum Handbook, incorporating Chabot policy into the information
provided.
V.
Good of the Order
Patricia has received a request from Applied Technology and Business to postpone the
presentation of the Automotive and Fire Technology disciplines’ packets due to new
requirements by their outside regulatory agencies. Also, these changes must go into
effect Spring 2009, rather than wait for Fall. It was noted that it is too late to get the
revisions into the Spring Schedule of Classes. Consensus was to accommodate the
request.
Jane commented on the Social Science packet that was approved in Spring. She noted
that the outlines say “Spring 2009.” This has been corrected to “Fall 2009.”
Jane also asked whether the committee can require that the paperwork for program
approval by the state be provided with the final packet.
MSC (Pitcher/Victoria) that we adopt as our policy that the required paperwork for
state approval of a new program be submitted by the end of the semester in which the
program is approved by the committee. If not, the new program will not go forward
for approval by the Board, and the program must be resubmitted to the Curriculum
Committee in the next curriculum cycle.
Reminder: complete the stand alone course training webinar by the end of the month. Go
to www.cccconfer.org, click “view meet and confer archives,” and choose “Certification
training for stand-alone credit course approval” (August 22, 2008). Begoña noted that to
view the webinar you must have Java installed on your computer. Ernesto suggested
using the machines in one of the computer labs as an alternative. It was also noted that
Computer Support can add Java to individual computers rather quickly.

Wayne Pitcher reported that Alice Lo, Administrative Assistant in the Science/Math
division was hospitalized recently for heart surgery. She will be out for at least 4 weeks.
Jane reported that while meeting with a faculty member who was requesting articulation
she came across a stand-alone course. To whom should she refer faculty proposing
stand-alone courses to be sure that the proper paperwork is submitted to the state. (To
the division’s Curriculum rep.)
VII.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
Next Meeting: September 30, 2008, Room 1506.
