Classified Senate Minutes – 21 March 2014 • Welcome/Call to Order. • Approve minutes from February 2014 meeting with changes from Chasity Whiteside o Motion: Noell Adams o Second: Gordon Watt o Passed unanimously by all present • President's Report o Did not go to board meeting o Chabot has a new VP of Academic Services: Dr. Stacy Thompson o New hires planned: 3 new custodians, a research analyst, and a night dispatcher o President Sperling's Brown Bag Plan to hire 9 new faculty • One will be dedicated to athletics • One will be digital photography Chabot 5 counselors are retiring and not all are on the list for replacement because it wasn't included on the prioritization • Vice President's Report o President Sperling's next Brown Bag is about Classified Staff o Reminder: we are still in accreditation and could use help Haven't progressed much due to work-load It's not optional to go through accreditation process o Reminder: fill out accreditation survey from Carolyn Arnold • Secretary's Report o Christie Verarde will be resigning from the position of secretary o October notes have been prepared and September notes are in progress o Need to hold elections for new treasurer Election committee: Gordon Watt, Katrin Field, and Noell Adams o Trisha Avila replaces Katrin as Student Services Representative • Treasurer's Report o Co-curricular account has $5,074 with deposit of $140 from St. Patrick's Day basket. o General Funds have: $30 in supplies $100 in travel Page 1 Classified Senate Minutes – 21 March 2014 o Deductions from payroll to co-curricular account are $115 per month • SEIU Report o Chabot Received survey from classified staff and results showed that concerns relate to income and benefits March 26 – Negotiations begin • District Team: David Betts, Kathryn Linzmeyer, Wyman Fong, Dyan Mitchell, Barbara Yesnosky and possibly a lawyer • SEIU Team: Kaden Kratzer, Nely Obligacion, Chasity Whiteside, Gregory Correa, Jeff Nelson, William Eddy, and Dee Sanchez as current sub o Regional Demonstration in Hayward regarding pay cut and the contract imposed on them March 8 – School industry meeting • Shows all works have the same problems • Offers support Chabot ranked toward the bottom of a list of clean colleges—lack of cleanliness the result of facilities staff being understaffed • St. Patrick's Day basket o Winner: Lora Bongard o Sold most tickets: JoAnn Cerefice o Made $140 on basket • Classified Appreciation Week: June 9th o Breakfast on June 9th o Jeff Drouin and athletics department will host BBQ June 10th o Ice cream sponsored by President Sperling's office on June 11th o Hold it at Caesar Chavez plaza by DSRC o We can pay expenses for night shift's food so they receive something from the classified appreciation week too o Include student assistants and on-call staff for appreciation week o Could have a class on emergency/safety training to keep us upto-date • Workload concerns o Faculty Senate made a statement via Kathy Kelley to the Board of Trustees that there have been unreasonable cuts and unreasonable expectation on those who remain Page 2 Classified Senate Minutes – 21 March 2014 o We need to remind the board that Classified Staff have felt the same unreasonable cuts and unreasonable expectations o Gordon Watt and Chasity Whiteside will draft a letter expressing this • State Senate Classified regarding job training and advancement o Should we send a letter to the senate as a group or an individual? Individual letters show more impact • Individuals know about their areas than the group • Individuals can provide more detail • Letters are handled by the senate equally, whether written by a group or an individual; therefore, many individual letters have more impact than one group letter. A letter can still be sent as a group • Student Services o Student Senate (SSCC) packet is out. We should let people know. • Basic Skills Committee o Nothing to report • Budget Committee o Nothing to report • College council o Still looking at defining what college council is o Their goal is to be a policy making body • DEMC o Nothing to report • CEMC o Catherine Powell will attend next meeting • Online Learning Committee o Nothing to report • DBSG o Nobody present at Classified Senate meeting attended DBSG Page 3 Classified Senate Minutes – 21 March 2014 o DBSG is looking at Chancellor's idea to add 4 IPBM committees to improve communication between District, Chabot, and Las Positas o Board approved, passed last Tuesday o We will need a Classified Senate representative at these meetings o Are classified personnel allowed to be on faculty hiring committees? Some deans say yes, others say no We can check the HR website to find out • Facilities Committee o PE exterior is being finished o New wrought iron gates are installed and people can see into pool deck o Progress on building 1700 is moving along but construction crews are blocking fire lanes and have other safety violations, which creates liabilities o Parking Lot G project is still in progress o "Talkaphones" will be running by June in G lot o Marquee is in progress but construction has damaged sprinkler system and more time is being spent repairing damage than working on the marquee itself o The Chabot Health Center wants to move to building 700 South Currently in building 100, which will be under construction Would cost $50,000 Does not take into account where current offices in the building would be relocated It would take a lot of time and money for construction to convert the building • Health & Safety Committee o Parking issues regarding staff in student lots When staff take student spaces, students are forced into staff spaces Students and contractors pay for parking; staff does not pay for parking • Staff should use the spaces provided for them because everyone else is paying for the spaces being taken from them Hazardous Materials Inspection • Inspection went well • People knew where everything was located • Only minor bits were noted Page 4 Classified Senate Minutes – 21 March 2014 • Signs needed for "No bicycle riding, No skateboarding on campus" Need an eCigarette policy Would like a campus intruder and active shooter training in the next year PRBC o Meetings are being held twice per month now, not once per week o Deans provided summary of program reviews o Other program reviews will be given from groups without deans o There is concern that faculty is doing classified work when classified cannot do faculty o There is greater concern because faculty members will ask for a stipend when doing classified work • Staff Development Committee o Not meeting until next week o Working on staff development days—talked about who is responsible o Staff development is not a required day for classified like it is for faculty o Would like development state-funded, not from our budget • Technology Committee o Buildings 1700 and 1800 put in distance education classrooms One teacher can broadcast to rooms at Chabot and Las Positas o A temporary webmaster will be hired under Counseling because they have the budget to pay for the position. For the 2014-2015 year, the webmaster position will be full-time. o Measure B funding is almost out because it was used by District facilities.
