Assessment Loop
1.
Design and Measure Student Learning
as a result of the Course or Program

Most faculty [staff] have experience with
curriculum, program development and
program review; outcomes assessment
simply builds on these review processes,
while incorporating the shift from what
we will do as teachers - to what the
students can do as a result of the course.
4
Assessment


The challenge is to articulate the
desired outcomes and document
how well the outcomes were
achieved.
The primary purpose is improving
teaching and learning.
5
Evidence of assessment
Characteristics of Evidence
Evidence includes:
*Achievements
*Student Learning Outcomes
Evidence involves:
*Dialogue
*Reflection
*It can be Qualitative & Quantitative but
documented

Next steps of Assessment
1.
Assessment Cycle
 Review
the written SLO
 Is the SLO measurable?
2.
Identify the tool & method of
evaluation
 Multiple
choice exam, essay, case study,
performance, problem solving, etc.
 How will you assess? RUBICS or
something similar…
 Administer evaluation
7
Collection of data
3.
4.
5.
6.
Tabulation of data for the SLO
Analysis of individual data
Analysis of “collective” data for
course with peers
Discussion of any refinements
based on the data
8
Closing the Loop
Review or modify course SLO, course
objectives, assessment method(s)
 CLOSE the Loop!

Program Assessment
Similar as for the course SLO
 Identify Program SLO
 Identify evaluation method
 Collect, discuss and analyze data
 Determine if refinement is needed
based on the data
 Modify and review program or service
 YOU CLOSED THE LOOP!
