Definition of an SLO
• Student Learning Outcomes
(SLO)- “The knowledge, skills,
abilities, and attitudes that a student
has attained at the end (or as a
result) of his/her engagement in a
particular set of collegiate
experiences.” (ACCJC-WASC)

completion of a course or student
services program.

• In California, ACCJC-WASC adopted in
2002, a new accreditation standards that
reinforced a national initiative in higher
education.
• Key standard: II.A.1.c. The institution
identifies student learning outcomes for
courses, programs, certificates, and
degrees; assesses student achievement of
those outcomes; and uses assessment
results to make improvements.
