September 3, 2014 DRAFT SLOAC STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Committee Members in Attendance: Yolanda Bellisimo, Sara McKinnon, Blaze Woodlief, Fernando Agudelo-Silva, Beth Patel, Robert.McCoy, Cara Kreit, John.Erdmann, Derek Levy, Steven Newton, Chris Myers Absent: Jessica Park, Robert Ovetz, Anne Gearhart, Tonya Hersch, Becky Brown Note: Christina Leimer will replace Chris Myers on SLOAC as the PRIE representative. I. Review WASC requirements for SLOs in the new standards In the updated WASC standards, accountability for SLOs appears in Standard I and Standard II. The committee reviewed the new standards and discussed evidence we will need to gather to demonstrate our SLO work. Sara noted that the identification and assessment of SLO is required on the COR and Dong has them listed on line for every course. The committee discussed whether chairs should be alerted to require a syllabus for every section be placed in the department office. II. Review of Student Learning Outcomes section of the full program reviews Last spring, Sara passed out the SLO sections and the Point of Improvement sections of the full program review for review by SLOAC members. Each committee member took a program or programs to review and comment on. Committee members responded to the SLOs and Point of Improvement sections and returned comments and suggestions to Sara who made them available to the programs. The problem was the SLOAC comments were about the writing of the section more than the substance of the report of SLOs. The committee agreed that SLOAC should have a dialog with programs about SLOs and what and how they are using them. All programs/departments will be asked to submit the SLO department meeting prompt once completed. The committee also discussed how a follow-up discussion would be held with programs that completed the full program review in the previous year. There are 18 programs we would need to ask about SLO to determine what has been the dialog within the program. The committee discussed the possibility of holding meetings across disciplines with an SLOAC member there. We could take questions #2 and #3 to department meetings and involve the program in a dialogue with a SLOAC member taking notes. It was decided instead that we would invite programs, perhaps two at a time and across disciplines, to a SLOAC meeting and conduct the interview/discussion at the meeting. At the next SLOAC meeting English Skills and Social Sciences will be invited to discuss their SLO and point of improvement sections from last year’s program reviews. The committee discussed the tenor for how that discussion should be held and the types of questions or prompts that should come from the committee. Questions and prompts included: How can the committee help you (the program) with the SLO section of the program review? What kind of evidence does your department/program use to determine areas where students are not meeting standards? Have interventions been tested to determine their impact? What tools or tests were used? Can the program give examples of findings from SLO research and resultant interventions? What is the most useful data for your program for researching outcomes? What are the obstacles? What challenges do you have when gathering outcomes evidence? What support do you need in doing this work? Did your program/discipline use the common rubrics – which ones? III. Review of Department/Discipline SLO Matrices The committee reviewed which departments/disciplines had updated their template and which appeared on the SLO web page as updated. The committee reviewed the list of the remaining programs and divided up those that will be contacted. The goal is to have all of them updated on the web page this semester. IV. Set Meeting Dates It was agreed that the committee will meet the first Wednesday of each month for this school year. Meetings will be held from 3:10 to 4 PM. V. Old or New Business The October meeting will include presentations/discussions about program review SLOs with Social Sciences, College Skills, and English/Humanities. Cara will contact College Skills and English/Humanities about attending the meeting. Yolanda will present for Social Sciences.
