Mostofthestudentsenrolledinthecourseincorporatetechnicalwritingintotheirdaily
lives.Becauseofthis,themajorityofmystudentswerealreadyfamiliarwithcreating
technicalreports.Student’sgrammarissueswerequicklyremediedbydiscussingtheir
workduringofficehours,providingweeklyassignmentstohelpthempracticetheir
writing,andifneededrecommendingtheyenrollintoandESLorGrammarcourse.

Thestudent’sexperienceintheirfieldsaswellastheneedforthemtolearnterminology
inthecoursesdedicatedtotheirfieldshelpedthestudentsgatherthelanguageneeded
tocreateclearandprofessionalreports.However,theirabilitytointerpretdataand
informationpresentedtothemwasabitmorelabored.Oncetheyappliedthe
informationordatatotheirfield,itbecameeasiertodevelopthisskill.

Theclasswascomprisedofindividualsindifferentfields.Theywerealsoatdifferent
readingandwritinglevels.Studentswereabletofindafocushowevertheyoftenlacked
thecriticalthinkingskillstofindanargumentandgathersupportforanargument.For
manyofthem,thiswasthefirsttimetheywereaskedtobreakafocusapartandcreate
meaningfromthosemultipleparts.Itwasalsoformanyofthemthefirsttimetheywere
askedtosynthesizeandcreateconclusionsfrommultiplesources.

Thecourseallowsstudentswhoarealreadyworkinginaparticularfieldtohonetheir
technicalwritingskills.However,havingmultiplevocationaldepartmentstakeawriting
classtogether,taughtbyaninstructorthatisnotinthefieldtheyarestudying,doesnot
allowthestudentstodivemuchfurtherintotheirfieldofinterestwhileinclass.
Thelackofarequiredpre-requisiteforthecourseallowsstudentstoenrollintheclassat
verydifferentskilllevels.Thismakestheabilitytopaceandstructurethecourseinaway
thatisproductiveforeveryonedifficultandsometimesimpossible.
Irecommendthiscoursebeofferedintheirdepartments.MaybeanEnglishinstructorcan
