developed to solve a problem.
• Network devices operate at different
layers of the OSI model.
• Are represented by Cisco icons.

Repeater
• Problem: On a long wire, signal gets weak.
• Function: to strengthen signal & extend it to
a new media segment.
• Layer 1 device - works with bits.
• Animation

• Problem: workgroups need shared access
to printers, files, etc.
• Function: to provide concentrated
connections for workgroups.
• Hub is a multi-port repeater.
• Layer 1 device - works with bits.

• Problem: too much traffic jams network.
• Function: to segment traffic and contain
traffic jams.
• Layer 2 device - works with MAC
addresses.

segment traffic.
• Combines advantages of hub & bridge.
• Switch is a multi-port bridge.

• Function: to direct traffic over multiple paths.
