College Credit While in High School COMPUTER NETWORKING (CISCO/LAN) ACADEMY This academy blends theory and practical hands-on experience, building and managing a computer network, troubleshooting connectivity problems and lessening basic network security threats. Students who complete all four Cisco courses are eligible to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification examination recognized throughout the technology industry. Things you must know about this academy prior to registration: This academy experience is currently available to students with a Kirkwood certified and trained academy instructor within your high school. If you are interested, you should work with your high school guidance counselor to determine course availability and times, eligibility requirements, and process for enrollment in these courses. Students enrolled will receive credit from your high school and college credit from Kirkwood. The college tuition is paid for by your high school district. The grade earned in this course will be reflected on the student’s official college transcript. Student’s not planning to attend Kirkwood after high school graduation should plan to include this transcript as part of your application process to other colleges or universities. www.kirkwood.edu/transcript As part of earning college credit for this academy, students must complete an online application to Kirkwood Community College, and must provide a Social Security Number as part of the secure online college application process to create the official student record. Students must have completed an introductory computer course to qualify for this academy. NET-212 Cisco Networking 3 College Credits This course provides the student with a basic understanding of networking. Topics include OSI model and industry standard network topologies, IP addressing with subnet mask, networking components and basic network design. NET-222 Cisco Routers 3 College Credits This course is designed for students who have successfully completed NET-122, and builds on this knowledge to introduce the Cisco family of routers, setup, configuration and management of using routers in a network environment. YEAR TWO NET-232 Cisco Switches 3 College Credits This course is designed for students who have successfully completed NET-212 and NET-222 in year one of the LAN Academy. This course provides hands-on experience working with network routing in a server-based network environment using the NetWare network operating system, and covers router configuration and routing protocols. NET-242 Cisco Wide Area Networks 3 College Credits This course provides the students with a basic understanding of how Cisco routers are integrated with PBX interfaces. Topics include hardware used to connect networks using leased and dial-up telephone lines.
