Curriculum Committee October 10, 2013 Members Present: Ex-Officio: Guests: 1. Jane Church, Lynn Klein, Larry Leach, Wayne Pitcher, Patricia Wu Kaaren Krueg, Dale Wagoner Clara McLean, Felicia Tripp Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 12:20 by the chair, Wayne Pitcher. Jane showed the committee how to access the GE information on a course proposal. 2. Course/Program discussion/approval Clara McLean presented the following proposals for new courses in support of the proposed AA-T in English: English 35, Modern and Contemporary U.S. Literature, 3 units English 41, World Literature (17th Century to the Present), 3 units Wayne read (at her request) comments submitted by Begoña Cirera-Perez, who was unable to attend today’s meeting. Looks good, other than some of the textbooks being from the 80's - rationale required. (Engl 35) and Maybe should have some Isabel Allende in the list of textbooks... especially since this author is listed as a "typical assignment"? (Engl 41) Consensus was that these comments did not necessitate changes to the presentations. MSC (Church/Klein et al.) to approve English 35 and English 41 as presented. English (AA-T) In answer to Dale’s question, Jane explained why there are non-English-discipline courses in the degree, and demonstrated how they fit into the template. Jane will submit the new courses to UC next week, and should receive a response in November. If they are approved, she can submit them for IGETC in December, and will hear back in April. MSC (Klein/Leach) to approve the English AA-T pending CID approval of the courses. Jane clarified that in order to submit the program to the state, only submission to CID is necessary. Approval can come later. The English discipline will be modifying the existing English AA, and will submit it later in this year’s curriculum cycle. Clara will also be submitting an American Cultures request for English 35. Felicia Tripp presented the following modification, designed to make the course UC transferable and to include critical thinking outcomes: Psychology-Counseling 23, College Readiness, 3 units In answer to a question, Jane removed the Strongly Recommended advisory with Felicia’s consent. MSC (Wu/Klein) to approve Psychology-Counseling 23 as corrected. Curriculum Committee 10/1/13, Page 2 Lynn Klein presented the following new course, designed for non-business majors as an alternative to Business 10. Business 20, Law and Society, 3 units The discipline is requesting UC transfer, IGETC, CSU-GE and AA/AS placement. MSC (Church/Wu) to approve Business 20 as presented. 8. kk 10/11/13 The meeting was adjourned at 1:55 PM. Next meeting: October 15, 2013, in Building 100.
