Funding Source: ☐ General ☐ ✔ Categorical 100 ☐ Grant Grant name: % % % Justification: Why is this position necessary? The DSRC computer lab requires a Computer Lab Specialist to assist students as they use the computers in the DSRC, support the Assistive Technology Instructor, maintain the computer stations and supervise student assistant working in the lab. Since the lab courses are taught for only 12 hours per week, this leaves the Hi-Tech Lab unattended for hours. While the Assistive Technology Instructor is teaching, she is interrupted by the need to trouble shoot a problem for a student. Also, the Alternate Media Technology Specialist and the Counselor Assistant II staff are constantly being taken away from their job responsibilities when there is a problem in the Hi-Tech Lab. This disrupts the delivery of academic accommodations to students with disabilities. What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations? The Computer Lab Specialist would insure that the computers in the DSRC are used appropriately by This position support DSPS CAS classes, which are purposes foundational to Many student successsneak across students. Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs to be considered? The individual will work in the DSRC assistive computer lab. This person will report directly to the DSPS director (or coordinator). No special needs anticipated. What is the consequence of not funding this position? If this position is not funded, many student needs will go unaddressed, or be required to be addressed by other staff members, which takes them away from their designated duties. Having more consistent oversight in the computer lab will also ensure continuity of experience, security of the machines, and their proper designated use. What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request? No efficient and effective strategies have been found to address the need. Current use of existing staff has not proven to be adequate for the needs of the students. How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this position? DSPS students and staff, as well as certain faculty, will be positively impacted by the filling of this position, through quicker resolution of computer issues, questions, and needs, as well as the overall positive impact of better computer use and assistance. What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students? The Alternate Media Specialist and various student assistants currently attempt to provide support in this area, but in the first case there are issues of primary job responsibilities taking precedence over direct student assistance in the computer lab, and in the second there are issues of consistency, authority, and reliability.
