Justification:
Why is this position necessary?
The Financial Aid Advisor I position will share in student advisement at the front counter, on phones
and via email. FAA1 staff will share in support of BOG, Higher One access issues, managing the
intake process and file management. With this position, FAA2 staff will be able to focus on complex
file review, corrections and awarding of eligible aid, providing more timely responses to student
inquiries and problem resolution. Additionally, they will be able to devote more time to their assigned
FA program (Cal Grant, Dreamers, FWS, student loans, etc.)
What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request
relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations?
Staffing request directly relates to our overall program goals of improving student success by providing
students with advisement and aid to complete their program of study.
Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs
to be considered?
Financial Aid Office
Financial Aid Director
No
What is the consequence of not funding this position?
Our current staffing model with prior, new and increasing responsibilities and regulations has resulted
in direct loss of student contact, increased response time to student inquiries and file review/awarding,
and loss of integrity/accuracy. Staff are spread too thin, and current demands make them rush when
they need to be accurate. They cannot spend any length of time on or with any one student. We
cannot get beyond reacting, rather than strategically planning and being out in front of required new
programs, regulations and best practices. Our students are not being served as they should, and we
need to provide them with appropriate services.
What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request?
One FAA1 position cannot man the front counter eight hours per day. Student assistants and hourly
staff do not have the breadth of training, knowledge and experience to best serve students at the front
counter. FAA2 staff have shared in both front counter and phone coverage, but this detracts from their
essential duties.
How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this
position?
With more dedicated front counter and phone coverage, processing staff (FAA2) would be able to
devote more time to student advisement, file review, awarding, problem resolution and infuse more
attention into their assigned FA program work (Cal Grant, Loans, Scholarships, FWS, Dreamers, etc.)
We would have the capability of additional front counter coverage.
What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students?
FAA2 staff currently share in the front desk and phone coverage, which necessarily limits the amount
of time they can devote to file review, awarding, and their assigned FA program (Cal Grant, Loans,
Scholarships, FWS, Dreamers, etc.)
