________________________________________________________________________________ Summary of 2015-16 Program Review for World Languages, Year 2 By Marcia Corcoran, Dean Curriculum: Updated course outlines for all Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Approved AA-T for Spanish and AA in Spanish and French. Courses (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B) included in various college and state requirements: AA, transfer, General Education, IGETC area 3 (Arts and Humanities). New 3-unit options for Spanish and French 1A and 1B. Instruction: Sole use of target language, student-centeredpedagogy, authentic cultural materials. Online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. 2 5-week back-to-back option for summer intensive. Professional development for teaching methodology, Blackboard usage, articulated assumptions to ensure consistency across levels and a unifying World Language identity. Student Success: 56% average over 3 years for first- and second-year students.With Blackboard, students access grades online, to monitor their own success.Developed strategies for lowperforming students. Need to increase opportunities for practice—group and conversation sessions and tutoring support in Learning Connection, additional World Language Lab hours, online tools and resources such as Wimba Voice. Initiatives: Updated World Language website. Across languages and sections, developed consistency for syllabi, prerequisite-challenge and credit-by-exam procedures. Increase number of students in 1A courses and in AA degrees. Plan to reinstate Chinese and Italian. Human Resources: Request 1 full-time Spanish/World Language position. Increase hours of World Language lab to M-F 9-5 by adding part-time Spanish instructor for 15 hours per week = $30,000 per year. Request WL Coordinator reassigned time (.20 FTEF). Fiscal Resources: Request 1.56 FTEF for Chinese and Italian. Physical Resources: none at this time Technical Resources: Request support for technology, specifically a campus server that would support uploading of video/audio files for hybrid and online courses. Request 2 Samsung tablets ($1200), VoiceThread license ($999/yr), Screencast Pro ($200)—all currently paid by instructors teaching online. Request to pilot Wimba Voice component of Blackboard, an audio tool (estimate $20,000). Outreach & Articulation: Outreach to high schools in target language approaches. Create better alignments with Los Positas World Languages. 1 Student Learning Outcomes: ~CLO:14 written and assessed. ~PLO:2 written and assessed. Used a common rubric and form for oral presentations and written compositions to assess proficiency in understanding and using grammatical structures presented and vocabulary assigned. ~Number of courses w/ outcomes:14 ~Number of courses with assessments:14 with 3 not currently offered and 11 to be reassessed in Spring 2015.
