The specialized counseling staff provides academic, career, personal and crisis counseling, and offers a variety of Psychology Counseling courses to assist students with successful transition to and beyond college. They provide academic assessment, Student Educational Plans, and referrals for diagnostic evaluations, in addition to help meeting Department of Rehabilitation requirements. The DSPS staff also assists with academic accommodations based on individual student needs (such as additional testing time for students with disabilities), with community resources (such as special transportation services), and has a "High Tech Center" that includes adaptive computer equipment. DSPS promotes awareness of physical and other barriers to students with disabilities, and works to ensure the college complies with the national Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In addition to services located in the Disabled Student Resource Center (DSRC), DSPS also encompasses the Learning Skills Program, Computer Applications Systems (CAS) classes, and Adaptive Physical Education at the college. Each spring, DSPS sponsors Disability Awareness Day which draws the surrounding community to a day of special speakers, an information fair, a hosted barbecue, and features an annual wheelchair race that promotes a spirit of cooperation while fostering team competition. Students are also employed in the Center, and some serve as tutors, readers, and interpreters. The Able-Disabled Club exists to support the needs of students, providing social gatherings and activities that also create campus awareness of the needs of students with disabilities. DSPS offers the campus a challenge: "Dare To Be Aware!" Are you eligible for Services from DSPS? To be eligible for support services through the Disabled Student Services Program, you must first submit a "Verification of Disability Form" signed by a physician or agency, and an "Intake Form" available from the Office of Disabled Student Services in Building 2400, Disabled Student Resources Center (DSRC), to be filled out in the office at your first appointment.
