Justification:
Why is this position necessary?
The question arose during the Accreditation interviews; they were surprised that DSPS had a
Counselor/Coordinator instead of a Director. They mentioned to our DSPS Administrators that large
DSPS programs throughout the system are under Directors.
Historically, DSPS has had a DSPS Counselor/Coordinator but this type of position no longer meets
the needs of the college. A Counselor/Coordinator is a 10 month counseling faculty position and is a
peer to the other DSPS faculty and classified staff. Since DSPS consists of 1 support service and 4
academic instructional areas: the Disabled Student Resource Center (DSRC), Adapted Physical

program. A Counselor/Coordinator has not only coordinating responsibilities but they are counselors
and instructors as well; this does not lead to stability. Since the Counselor/Coordinator position is a 10
month position this may lead to the staff not determining a solution to a difficult situations when the
Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs
to be considered?
This person will work within the DSRC, and will report to the Dean of Special Programs.
No special needs are expected.
What is the consequence of not funding this position?
If this position is not funded, DSPS will not be supported with 12-month oversight. The growth of the
program (and the recommendation from the accreditation committee) necessitates the change from a
10-month coordinator to a 12-month director.
What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request?
The only alternative is to continue on the current path of a 10-month coordinator/counselor, which
while effective in the past with a smaller program, does not look to be sustainable with the historic
growth of the program and its related needs.
How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this
position?
Students, staff, faculty, and community alike will all be positively impacted with the accessibility of
12-month oversight. There would not be any continuity issues for students and staff that arise from the
current 10-month position, internal issues could be handled more directly, and the community would
benefit by being able to have more communication between the various schools/support programs
available and Chabot College itself, specifically DSPS and its various programs and opportunities.
What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students?
Currently oversight is provided by the 10-month counselor/coordinator, and while all needs have been
met under the counselor's oversight, the conversion to a director/12-month position would increase the
support available to the program and the students, increasing the program's strength and presence.
