Week 4 problem: Shapes
Shapes are an important element in art and are used to convey meaning within the imagery. In different
cultures, shapes are used in many ways and often there is a degree of distinctiveness in how the shapes are
used. Indigenous Australian art uses shapes in unique ways in its form.
In this activity you are required to investigate Indigenous Australian art and to explore the question, what are
the distinctive shapes and spaces that are used in its practice. To do this you will need to explore the form
that Australian Indigenous art takes by viewing a wide range of art pieces from across the country. You
should also read relevant literature to discover what has been written about Indigenous Australian art and its
unique forms.
Prepare a response which describes to the layperson, the various forms Australian Indigenous art can take
and the way shapes and space are used by the artists. Propose what you have discovered as the distinctive
and unique use of shape and space in this art.
