About RSSB
RSSB is an expert body that helps the rail industry collaborate to continuously improve
and meet future challenges. It spans the whole railway, including in its membership
infrastructure companies, train and freight operators, rolling stock owners and suppliers
to the industry. RSSB supports rail in the areas of safety, standards, knowledge,
innovation and a wide range of cross-industry schemes.
The role
The purpose of this role is to support the communications team with a range of media
and social media activity to promote an increase in understanding of, and engagement
with, RSSB’s activity. Provide additional support to the broader range of communication
activity including printing, online publishing, internal communications and event
management.
Key responsibilities:
 Raise awareness within RSSB of issues being reported on in the media impacting on
the organisation’s work and relationships with stakeholders through the monitoring
and distribution of relevant media coverage. Ensure senior leadership team is aware
of RSSB appearances in the media
 Help secure trade and national media coverage through the maintenance of an
editorial planning diary, by contributing to an overall communications planning matrix
and through the maintenance of contacts with key journalists and publications
 Manage incoming enquiries from journalists and work with colleagues in the
communications team to provide a response, demonstrating sound judgement and
understanding of RSSB’s priorities and activity

 Ensure RSSB is aware of important issues relating to rail (and transport in general)
being discussed by parliamentary and policy-influencing stakeholders. By working
with colleagues in the communications team, prepare briefing materials and suggest
ways of responding if considered prudent to do so
 Monitor conversations with stakeholders across RSSB’s social media channels and to
work with colleagues to assess when and how to engage with them in line with RSSB’s
agreed social media engagement strategy. Assist the team in building a more
engaging and dynamic content which attracts interest from RSSB’s stakeholders
 Manage communications campaigns in line with RSSB’s corporate communications
objectives and work with colleagues to communicate RSSB’s priority projects to
internal, rail industry and other target audiences
 Protect and enhance RSSB’s reputation through the management of some key visual
assets in line with the organisation’s agreed brand guidelines
Requirements
This is a role for a skilled professional communicator with an understanding of how to
combine a range of tactics in order to create solid communications plans. The role would
suit a proactive, gregarious individual with good news sense and strong writing ability.
They will need to work closely with colleagues in the communications team and across
the RSSB Engagement Directorate to understand and translate often detailed and
technical information so it can be disseminated to both discreet and mass audiences
depending on the impact and outcome desired.
It is an opportunity to work in a vibrant and busy communications team where the right
individual will have the opportunity to build on their existing skills through being
involved in a wide range of communication activities. Reporting to the Senior
Communications Manager in a sub-team of four people, the Communications Officer will
support the whole team while also having their own discreet policy areas and campaigns
to manage.
They will be responsible for creating and disseminating content across all of RSSB’s
owned media channels and play a crucial role in the gathering of information relating to
our corporate reputation though monitoring media, parliamentary and social media
spheres.
