COS FUV HV Turn-on Visit 2 (of 13)
COS NUV Functional Test

Upcoming COS SMOV Timeline
COS FUV HV Turn-on:
Visit 2 (of 13) HV to minimum level
•
•
•
•
HV successfully taken from minimum (-2500 v) to HVLOW (-4069v)
Currents are normal on both segments
Plots of the current ring buffers and histograms for FUV ramp to HVLOW
on following page.
Recommend ops request to clear event flag 3, continue with next step in
FUV HV turn-on procedure

Visit 2 (of 13) HV to HVLOW
SAA Detection
•
•
Both detectors see low levels of counts in SAA when at appropriate
SAA operating voltage
FUV also produces (mostly single) sporadic counts at HVLOW
even when not in SAA
Blue track: 17:20-17:40 UT
corresponds to upper-left count
level plot;
Upper-right count plot is from
next SAA passage (dotted track

COS NUV Functional Test
• The functional test (program 11467) obtains representative
exposures with NUV lamps and gratings
– one wavecal with each NUV grating (G185M, G225M, G285M,
G230L) with each PtNe lamp
– one MIRRORA and one MIRRORB image exposure with each PtNe
lamp
– One deuterium lamp exposure with lamp 1 (NOTE: deuterium lamp 2
used previously in fold test)
– One long-duration TAGFLASH exposure to examine OSM2 drift
• Establish spectrum and image locations that will be used in
the initial on-orbit update of target acquisition parameters
11467 executed successfully
• Quick look at data:
• All NUV gratings, MIRRORA and MIRRORB visited, all
lamps operated.
• All lamps functioned as expected, detailed analysis of spectra
in progress
• Spot check of 2006 TV data shows comparable count rates
• MIRRORA centroid change from pre-launch: ~+32 pixels in
y, -5 pixels in x - close to BASD predictions
• No apparent OSM2 drift in one 3600 sec exposure; detailed
analysis ongoing
• TA1 count rates unchanged from TV06 (~2788cps 6/5/2009
vs 2723cps in TV06)
• Image slightly broader (4.18 vs 3.91 pixels)
• With MAMA at 22-23C we get ~60 CPS background – still
much better than predicted.
.
MIRRORA image
•
MIRRORA image
only slightly
broader than in
Tvac-06 (4.18 vs
3.91 pixels
FWHM)
G225M WCA images from 11467
and from Tvac 06
•
Image motion
consistent with
MIRRORA image
motion
