COS SMOV Morning Update
9 June 2009
Agenda
• COS FUV HV Turn-on Visits 5 and 6 (of 13)
– Ramp-up status
– Dark and PtNe wavecal lamp exposures
• COS NUV Darks: 11466: 2 visits of 11 (COS05)
• Upcoming COS SMOV Timeline
.
COS FUV HV Turn-on:
Visit 5 and 6 (of 13) HVLOW to second ramp level
• On Mon 8 June:
– HV successfully taken from HVLOW (-4069 v) to second intermediate rampup level (seg A/B: -5010/-4963v for segment A and B respectively)
– All diagnostics remain nominal on both segments
–
• HV current histograms dumped immediately after the HV ramp (visit 5) and just before the
drop back to HVLOW (visit 6) were nominal; no indications of transient behavior.
• PHDs nominal; initial increase with voltage indicates nominal gain, will match TV06 data
• PHD shift agrees with shift for same delta HV seen in data taken during FUV02 sub-system
TV (Jan 2003).
Background rates slightly lower than at HV = 154/151 (visit 3) perhaps due to
orbital location or to MCPs cleaning up
– Count rate in wavecal spectra slightly lower than at visit 3.
• a small number of lines were weaker or stronger than visit 3 data.

• Day 160: Tues 09 June
– 11466: 2 visits of 11 (COS05) NUV darks
• 1146611 160:07:27:34 - 160:08:29:08
• 1146610 160:20:16:00 - 160:21:17:34
Upcoming COS SMOV Timeline
• Day 161: Wed 10 June
– 11356 visit 7 of 13 (COS23) FUV HV Turn-on
• ramp from HVLOW to third specified ramp value (seg A/B: -5105/5057V v), dump DCE, wave , dark exp
• OPS request required: clear NSSC-1 COS event flag 3 set in 1135606
• 1135607 161:19:24:25 - 161:20:01:53
• No event flag set; leave SI at HV level for 4 hours; then execute 1135608
– Contingency OPS request in place to place FUV in INHIBIT if anomaly
• science data
– 11356 visit 8 of 13 (COS23) FUV HV Turn-on
• After 4-hour wait at first specified ramp value, dump DCE RAM, return
to HVLOW
• sets event flag 3
• 1135608 161:23:39:25 - 161:23:41:01
• OPS request required: clear NSSC-1 COS event flag 3 prior to visit 9
Upcoming COS SMOV Timeline
• Day 162: Thurs 11 June
– 11468 visit 1 (COS08) COS-to-FGS Alignment / Coarse Focus
• “First-Light” : First observation of an external source with COS
(astrometric F type MS star in cluster NGC-188)
• After blind pointing perform 5x5 POS-TARG search pattern via
MIRRORA images at each point; perform pattern for 3 separate coarsely
separated focus settings
• Perform ACQ/SEARCH and ACQ/IMAGE tests; perform several
TAGFLASH image mode exposures to determine WCA-to-PSA offsets
for future target acquisition parameter updates
• 1146801 162:03:47:17 - 162:11:57:32
• Analysis of imagery will yield pointing update and may yield focus and
mechanism updates all to be uplinked via real-time contact in visit 2 on
Sat 13 June
