Reimbursement is available for the person who furnished transportation for an eligible client to a medical provider. Local Public Transportation providers meet the transportation needs of many Medicaid clients. Some clients can provide their own means of transportation, however, need assistance with gas or other transportation assistance. The Social Worker II/Medical Transportation Coordinator finds the means to help eligible clients have their medical transportation needs met. The major purpose of this position is to coordinate the Medicaid Transportation program for Hertford County DSS, and assist clients travel to and from medical appointments. This worker interacts daily with the public by telephone and through office visits for Medical Transportation. Medical Transportation requires this worker to be in daily telephone contact and personal contact with clients. Social Worker assesses income and resources and explores available travel resources. Approval of Medicaid eligibility does not automatically entitle an applicant for Medical Transportation. Extensive counseling on referrals and services is often required. The worker is responsible for reviewing, verifying and authorizing payment for medical transportation to various providers. This includes reviewing and verifying monthly bills, provider voucher forms and revising and calculating correct payment due to each provider. Using reimbursement sheets, this staff member completes and documents necessary information, verify that trip were made, calculates payment due, checks accuracy and records information on a purchase requisition that is forwarded to the DSS finance office for processing of payment to the provider. Twice monthly, this worker prepares purchase requisitions for transportation reimbursements. This is a process which requires tremendous amounts of verifying, checking, assuring accuracy of figures and calculating figures. These reimbursement requisitions must be thorough and accurate or the agency will lose funding. Social Worker counsels volunteers and contract drivers concerning providing appropriate services to our clients based on client’s needs and abilities. The position is responsible for maintaining files related to the Medical Transportation program. This includes filing within folders, retrieving information from folders, forms and documents in special files as well as using automated equipment to store and retrieve data. This staff member completes assessment forms to determine eligibility of clients for medical transportation program, reassessment of the clients, assembles files on each Medicaid recipient to include basic information about needs, scheduling for transportation and contacts various providers for transportation of recipients as needed. This worker maintains all files and documents necessary to support an audit trail and tracking system for the Medical Transportation Program; this requires skill and knowledge to interpret policy.
