U N I V E R S I T Y O F S O U T H A L A B A M A WINTER 2010 Taking the L ea d President “ L e a d e rs h i p t h ro u g h c h a ri t a bl e g i v i n g at the University of South Alabama” Letter from the Dear Friends, It is hard to believe that our historic “Campaign USA” is now complete. Thank you again for making USA’s first comprehensive campaign a resounding success. Countless people are being touched every day by the campaign’s legacy, whether it is: • a student who can continue his or her education with the assistance of a scholarship, • a patient whose life has been saved or improved through our health system, • a faculty member whose research is enhanced by donated equipment and facilities, or, • a citizen whose spirit is lifted through our enhanced art, cultural, and athletic programs. Your generosity lives on not only through the ongoing fulfillment of pledges, but through new philanthropy that is helping us to achieve our goals of teaching, research, service and health INSIDE this ISSUE care. USA’s alumni and supporters each day are raising the bar in the level of support we can provide the many constituencies that we serve. Even in the face of our global economic challenges, your University is healthy and vibrant. Here are a few headlines from campus: • USA’s enrollment is at record levels, hitting 14,757 this fall. • Our alumni family continues to grow, with more than 66,000 degrees now awarded. • Our health system will touch 250,000 patients each year, including 44,000 served by the Mitchell Cancer Institute. • USA’s football and marching band programs began with an undefeated first season that attracted 128,000 fans. • Our campus continues to mature, as we have completed a state-of-theart building for Nursing and Allied Health Professions and a new football field house; neared completion of the Moulton Tower and Alumni Plaza; and broke ground on Shelby Hall, the new home for Engineering and Computing Sciences, among other projects. USA is on the move. Your giving has never been more important to sustain our momentum and provide the margin of higher education excellence that only philanthropy can enable. We thank you for your confidence and your continued support. Sincerely, V. Gordon Moulton, President USA Wins Award ............................2 Alumni Leadership..........................3 Celebrate Hope ..............................4 Perfect Season .................................6 Upcoming Events ............................7 DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS Taking the Lead Page 2 A Message from the Vice President Dr. Joseph F. Busta, Jr. Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Campaign USA: Leadership has ended, but the impact of the Campaign has not, and the on-going level of annual private gift support for the University of South Alabama has been permanently increased as a result. Gift support for USA in 200910 will be significantly higher than it was in the last year prior to the Campaign. With gifts to the Campaign coming from all fifty states, and even other countries, it’s not just our local community that is providing increased support for scholarships, new technology, and enhanced healthcare. The momentum created by Campaign USA will have a continuous and long lasting effect on the University of South Alabama, and proof of that lies in the gift related stories in this issue of “Taking the Lead”. We can’t thank you enough for your part in making a difference at USA! You can read more about the success of Campaign USA: Leadership on our website, www.campaignUSAleadership.com. USA Wins CASE Award The University of South Alabama recently received national recognition for the overall improvement of its fundraising program from the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The University was honored with the 2009 CASE-Wealth Engine Award following an independent analysis of three years of fundraising data. The judges were senior fundraising officers from colleges and universities around the country. The University did not apply for this award. The CASE Circle of Excellence program, which includes the WealthEngine Award, honors exemplary educational fundraising programs and activities. The award comes after the University completed its first comprehensive fundraising campaign. The five year effort generated more than $93.5 million, exceeding the goal of $75 million. USA’s Vice President for Development, Dr. Joseph F. Busta, Jr. said, “This important national award is another tribute to the success of Campaign USA: Leadership and especially to our campaign leaders and staff who had the vision to set lofty goals, and the determination to exceed them. By doing so, USA now has the ability to compete nationally for private gift support for the betterment of the University and the community.” Children’s Park Renamed for Geri Moulton This past summer, the USA Board of Trustees passed a resolution renaming USA Children’s Park to the “Geri Moulton Children’s Park” in honor of Mrs. Moulton’s extraordinary contributions towards the creation and ongoing development of the park. The public park is located at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital and features over 50 sculptures given by various members of the community. Mrs. Moulton helped spearhead the creation of the park, made gifts of sculpture to the park, inspired gifts from other donors, and chaired events to honor artists and donors. Taking the Lead Page 3 Bicycle Event Supports the USS Hope Nearly 500 area cyclists participated in RIDEYELLOW, a fundraising bicycle ride in Baldwin County. The event, held this past summer, raised funds to support the USS Hope, the pediatric oncology treatment center at USA’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital. The organization presented a check for $25,000 to the hospital and has committed to support the USS Hope in next year’s RIDEYELLOW event. MITCHELL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS HOSTS FIRST OF RBC’S DISTINGUISHED LECTURESHIP SERIES This fall, RBC Bank pledged $45,000 to establish the first named Distinguished Lectureship Series at the Mitchell College of Business. The pledge provides for the cost of two annual lectures on banking or a related field. The first series, held this past fall featured Mr. Joseph Keating, RBC Bank’s Chief Investment Officer and Head of Private Asset Management. Keating has served as chief investment officer for the past nineteen years, fourteen of which were with Old Kent Financial in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Prior to joining RBC Bank, he spent four years as executive vice president and chief investment officer for AmSouth Asset Management. RBC Bank's Private Asset Management Division currently controls assets in excess of $4 billion. Keating is frequently quoted in elite publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Reuters and more. He is frequently interviewed on CNBC, Bloomberg News, FOX Business News and local TV and radio outlets. As the first RBC Distinguished Lecturer, Keating spoke to both MBA and undergraduate level students. His topic was the economy: the factors leading up to our current economy, where we are now, and where we are headed. Keating applied many of the principles students are learning in class during his lecture and held a question and answer session after his lecture. Dean Carl Moore said “The Mitchell College of Business is very appreciative of RBC's gift to support a Distinguished Lecture series. This program provides an opportunity for our students to discuss the current issues and problems facing American business with nationally known experts in their field. Mr. Keating was an excellent choice for our inaugural program and provided a detailed analysis of the recent economic recession.” ALUMNI LEADERSHIP GIVING BACK THROUGH PLANNED GIVING The University of South Alabama alumni leadership are leading the way in giving back to USA through planned gifts. Recently, several members of the Alumni Board of Directors have chosen to give through their wills, trusts, and more. Carol and Steve Kittrell have included the University in their will. The funds will be used to provide an annual scholarship for USA students. Carol is a 1983 graduate of USA and has been the Director of Alumni Relations at USA for 17 years. Steve received his degree in 1971 and later earned a master’s in 1973 at USA. He currently coaches the Jag’s baseball team, a position he has held for 27 years. “We received degrees from South Alabama that have afforded us rewarding and fulfilling careers,” said Steve and Carol. “Giving back through our wills is an easy way for us to say ‘thank you’ and perhaps provide this opportunity for future students.” Frank and Jean Brown have also included USA in their will. Their contribution will be used to support the Alumni Membership Endowment Fund. Frank graduated from USA in 1973 and is a past president of the National Alumni Association. “I feel the University has given me a tremendous opportunity and now I feel it is time for me to give back to South Alabama,” said Frank. Don and Beth Davis have established an irrevocable life insurance policy to establish scholarships for students in Mobile County. Both Don and Beth are graduates of USA, Don in 1978 and Beth in 1977. Don is also a Past President of the National Alumni Association. The couple resides in Mobile where Don is the Judge of Probate for Mobile County. Another alumni couple have chosen to include USA in their estate plans to establish student scholarships. George Davis, the current National Alumni Association President, and his wife, Jane, received their undergraduate degrees from USA in 1983. Jane later returned to complete a master’s in Education in 1997 at USA. These four couples are loyal supporters of the University and, along with many other alumni and friends of USA, understand that even when they are gone, their legacy will live on at USA through the scholarships and funds they will establish. Taking the Lead Page 4 COCO HAYS GIVES THE GIFT OF ART The University of South Alabama recently held the grand opening for the new $48.5 million Health Sciences Building, bringing the Colleges of Allied Health Professions and Nursing back to the main campus. The 186,000 square-foot building is the largest building on campus and provides our students with the latest in technology in classrooms and labs. At the grand opening, Mrs. Courtney “CoCo” Hays was recognized for her gift to fund the blown glass chandelier in the lobby of the building. Created by Colorado artist, Marty White Elk Holmes; this is the second gift made by Mrs. Hays. The Health Sciences Building also benefits from a multi-faceted $3 million gift by Mrs. Hays and her late husband, Dr. Jack Hays. The gift supports USA’s programs in health care related fields. “Mrs. Hays’ chandelier gift compliments the beauty of the building. This unique piece of art will be admired by everyone who passes through the facility. The Hays’ are very special to the University, and we are truly grateful for their generosity and support. Their gifts will be beneficial and have a significant impact on our students, faculty, and the University for many years to come,” said Dr. Joe Busta, Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations. Celebrate Hope 2009 The inaugural Celebrate Hope Gala was held on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. The event featured gourmet delicacies prepared by local celebrity chefs, wine and beer pairings, and entertainment by the Rock and Pop Masters, a band comprised of original singers and musicians of former top 40 bands. Celebrate Hope raised more than $200,000 for cancer research at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. Cynthia Zipperly and Tonia and Jerry Silverstein were event co-chairs. Mark your calendar for November 18, 2010, to attend the Second Annual Celebrate Hope Gala. It will be an event you will not want to miss! ROYALTIES MAKE GREAT GIFTS! GRETCHEN JONES SNACK FUND Dr. Marjorie Icenogle and Dr. Don Mosley, Jr, two Management professors in the Mitchell College of Business, chose to support USA’s Department of Management in a very unique way. They developed supplemental materials for the textbook, Understanding Management, by Richard L. Daft and Dorothy Marcic. Both chose to allocate the royalties they receive from the publication of the book to the Department of Management Endowed Scholarship Fund. “It truly makes a difference and inspires others when our faculty and staff give back. This is an excellent example of the many creative ways you can support USA and our students,” said Development Officer Lauren Roebuck. Dr. Icenogle said “One of our departmental goals is to increase our scholarship fund. Dr. Mosley and I saw the opportunity to bundle supplemental materials with the textbook as a win-win situation for the Department of Management and the students. Bundling the supplemental materials provided students with essential information, reduced the number of copied pages provided to students, and increased the Department’s scholarship fund.” Some people have a fear of chemotherapy, however the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute has gone to great lengths to make it as comfortable as possible for patients. With stunning landscaping views, comfortable recliners, internet access and more, the infusion suite in the MCI offers many distraction therapies to help alleviate some of the discomforts often associated with what can be a long, grueling process. However, it was one patient’s desire to do more for other patients who are confined to their chair hour after hour, day after day, with little opportunity to do much else. Before losing her battle against cancer, Gretchen Jones, along with her family and friends, found a way to help others by creating the Gretchen Jones Memorial Snack Fund. The fund enables the infusion staff to provide snacks for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy. Ms. Jones’ oncologist, Dr. Rodney Rocconi, USA MCI gynecologic oncologist, said, “Everyday I'm reminded of the special things that women affected with cancer can do. After a long battle with cancer, Gretchen Jones and her family demonstrated unquestioned generosity. At arguably the most difficult time in her and her family's life, they showed that selflessness knows no bounds.” Taking the Lead Page 5 Jan Mendenhall Names the College of Nursing Dean’s Reception Area Jan Mendenhall, a retired Labor and Delivery Nurse Manager at USA’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital and current part-time faculty member at the College of Nursing, recently named the Dean’s Reception Area within the College of Nursing after her late husband, Dr. Hiram W. Mendenhall. “My husband loved to teach, and he devoted a large part of his profession to teaching. I wanted to honor his dedication and commitment to teaching by naming a room for him,” said Mendenhall. Ms. Mendenhall also donated her husband’s favorite painting to be hung in the Dean’s Reception Area. Underneath the painting is a plaque with the quote “None can teach admirably if not loving his task,” by Amos Bronson Alcott. Funds raised from Mrs. Mendenhall’s room naming will support the College of Nursing Endowed Dean’s Fund. This endowment will provide unrestricted support for the College to enhance faculty development, research, student scholarships, and much more. “I was thrilled to learn that Jan had named the Dean’s Reception Area. This was the first room named within the College, and it is such a beautiful area. Many students and faculty will pass through our offices and know how dedicated Dr. Mendenhall was to his profession. It is a wonderful way to honor his legacy,” said Dr. Debra Davis, Dean of the College of Nursing. Second Annual Gumbo Chili Showdown In 2003, Regan Robinson Young, University of South Alabama medical student, was diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 23. After a year’s hiatus, Regan returned to medical school in the fall of 2004. She chose to continue her medical studies despite receiving a diagnosis of advanced cancer. Even as her cancer progressed, Regan kept pushing forward. Regan passed away on January 18, 2007. She was 26 and just months short of graduation. In memory of Regan, her fellow classmates established a scholarship fund just a few days after her death. “Regan was the epitome of academic excellence, and I think she touched the lives of many, many people, and I think she taught us all about loving,” said a fellow student. “She often used her own experiences to help other cancer patients cope.” While Regan’s quiet demeanor led her to downplay her illness among her peers, she still became an inspiration for many of the faculty and staff at USA. Regan’s family was awarded her medical degree posthumous at her graduation. In February of 2009, a group of College of Medicine students kicked off the Inaugural Gumbo Chili Showdown to honor Regan and to benefit this scholarship fund. The event raised $15,000 last year, and the students have set a goal of $30,000 for this year’s showdown, which will be held on March 6, 2010, from noon until 4:00 p.m. The Gumbo Chili showdown will be held at the USA Track, next to the Mitchell Center on the University of South Alabama Campus. We invite you to come out, have a good time, and most importantly support the cause! Sponsorship packages are also available starting at only $150 and team applications can be found online. CARDIORESPIRATORY EDUCATIONAL SERVICES GIVES TO ALLIED HEALTH Cardiorespiratory Educational Services, a company founded and owned by several USA cardiorespiratory care faculty members, has made a $100,000 gift to the Cardiorespiratory Endowed Gifts account in the College of Allied Health Professions. The gift will be used for scholarship support, lab equipment, or a part-time faculty member. Faculty and staff members involved in the company are Cardiorespiratory Care Chair, Bill Wojciechowski, professors Tim Op’t Holt and Dr. David Chang, instructors Fred Hill and Bill Pruitt, and secretary Deanna Winn. The company develops, markets and implements respiratory therapy curriculums. It also advances and modifies instructional strategies and classroom, laboratory, and clinical delivery methods to meet the needs of the higher education institutions it serves. “We are pleased to present this gift to the Department of Cardiorespiratory Care,” Wojciechowski said. “We are mindful that the University has been, and continues to be, instrumental in our individual and collective successes. Our expectation is that this gift will advance the quality of the Cardiorespiratory Care Program established by the current faculty, and enable scholarship and academic achievement of both future faculty and students of this department. We are also pleased that the presentation of this gift coincides with the dedication of the magnificent Health Sciences Building. This structure provides the environment wherein we envision the expectation of this gift being fulfilled." Taking the Lead Page 6 Perfect Season PERFECT. No other word best describes the Jaguar Football team’s inaugural season, filled with all the historic “firsts.” The first game, the first touchdown, the first win, and the first UNDEFEATED season – we could not have asked for more. Our tremendous success is due in part to the overwhelming support of our alumni and friends who gave of their time and resources to help bring the Jaguars to victory. As we begin the priority seating donation renewal for the 2010 season, we wish to express our sincere thanks to the more than 1,200 donors who invested in our program from the start. We hope we can count on your generosity in the seasons to come. Not only did the USA family support the Jaguars, but the community as a whole came out in full force to Ladd- Peebles stadium to cheer on the Jags. More than 126,000 fans attended seven home games, and close to 9,000 season tickets were sold in the first season, placing the University of South Alabama second in the Sun Belt Conference in season ticket sales just behind Troy University. We now look with great anticipation to the 2010 season, which will bring a new element to Jaguar Football – away games! Three games are on the schedule – UC Davis (Davis, CA), Lamar (Beaumont, TX) and Edward Waters (Jacksonville, FL) – so be on the lookout for future information on how to “go on the road with the Jags!” Again, our sincere thanks for your dedication and support. GO JAGS!!! The Jacobs Family Endows Two Scholarships in Nursing Dr. Mike Jacobs, Chair and Professor in the College of Nursing’s Department of Adult Health Nursing and Director of Human Simulation for Health Sciences, and his wife, Dr. Janice Jacobs, a practicing optometrist in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, have endowed a second scholarship within the College of Nursing. Their first scholarship, The Drs. Mike and Janice Jacobs Endowed Scholarship for Emergency Nurse Practitioners, was established in May 2007 and is awarded to a student admitted into the College’s Master of Science in Nursing Program. The Emergency Nurse Practitioner Program educates students in treating patients across the lifespan with urgent primary care needs, acute and critical illnesses, and those with accidental injuries or trauma. In March 2009, the Jacobs created their second scholarship at USA, the Jacobs Family Scholarship for Accelerated Nursing Students. The scholarship is awarded to students admitted into USA’s accelerated nursing program. This fast paced program is offered to students who have completed a bachelors or graduate degree in a non-nursing discipline. “These scholarships are an excellent resource for the College of Nursing. The Jacobs family is not only investing in nursing students, but in the lives of each and every person the students take care of. Many students will benefit from their generous gifts,” said Kristyn Seawell, Development Officer for the College of Nursing. If you work for a matching gift company, just send your employer’s matching gift form with your gift, and USA will take care of the details. Both you and your company will be recognized for the matching gift. Bequest through a will or living trust—many donors find a bequest the most convenient way to leave a legacy to USA. Charitable trust or other life income plan—various trust arrangements such as charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts, and charitable lead trusts may enable you simultaneously to make a gift to the University, retain income from the assets, and secure a tax advantage. Gifts of real and personal property—your gift of real estate, works of art, collectibles, rare books, copyrights, and oil and gas interests may be sold and the proceeds endowed or used for capital or operating funds. Gifts of useable scientific equipment or computers may go immediately into the classroom or research laboratory. Gift with funds that are returned to you or passed to your loved ones—you can make a gift of cash or other assets through an arrangement that will provide USA with annual gifts over a specified period and then pass the gift principal to your heirs or have it returned to you. These creative gift plans offer valuable income, as well as gift and estate tax savings, depending upon which type you choose. IRA’s and qualified retirement plans—because these assets may be subject to heavy taxation when passed to your heirs, they are wonderful assets to consider using for charitable giving. Your gift can be made simply by designating USA as a beneficiary of your retirement plan. If, however, you meet the minimum age for withdrawals and would benefit from a deduction to use against your current taxes, you might also consider a lifetime distribution to USA. Due to the dynamic nature of the law, you should consult your tax advisor prior to making such a gift. Life insurance—a life insurance policy that is no longer needed can be donated during your lifetime to support your favorite University program. Such a gift offers you income and estate tax savings. USA can also be named as a beneficiary of a new or existing policy. University of South Alabama Office of Development TRP III, Suite 2150 307 N.
