Ministries supported by the Appeal include the Office of Religious Education, which provides oversight and assistance to our Religious Education program, and Parish Services, which provides assistance with critical business needs from processing payroll and benefits for lay parish staff to helping our parish maintain the buildings we operate. In advance of next weekend, please prayerfully consider how you will support the 2014 Catholic Appeal. Making a pledge, which can be paid in up installments through January 31, 2015, is a powerful way to maximize your contribution. For more information on the 2014 Catholic Appeal or to pledge online, please visit BostonCatholicAppeal.org. Thank you for your prayers and support as we all help further Cardinal Seán’s mission as we move forward in hope. SPRING RETREAT AT EASTERN POINT IN GLOUCESTER We have a few places available if you would like to attend the retreat. This semi-annual retreat is an opportunity to enter more deeply into the mystery of God’s love for us. You will have an opportunity for spiritual conversation, silent prayer and gatherings of prayer and worship with members of the parish community. The retreat will be held Friday, March 7th to Sunday, March 9th. The cost for the weekend is $300 (all inclusive), with a deposit of $100 at registration. SPRING DISCUSSION GROUP 2014 Our spring discussion group is now forming. We will meet, as usual, at the Jesuit residence, 130 Beacon Street, at 7:30 PM for four Wednesday evenings began February 19th and will end on March 19th. There will be no meeting on Ash Wednesday, March 5th. We will end by 9:00 PM each evening. Frs. Bob and J.A. will host the meetings. This is in some ways a continuation of our conversations about Ann Rice’s book Christ the Lord: the Road to Cana that we discussed in the fall. In the spring we will take up Reza Aslan’s best-selling new book called Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth (NY: Random House, 2013). This non-fiction work proposes that Jesus was, indeed, a political revolutionary who was executed for treason by the Roman occupying army. He was one of many such zealots in his time. The contrast between the two images of Jesus should prove interesting fodder for discussion and offer an opportunity for each of us to re-assess our own working image of just exactly who Jesus was and is for us today. The book should be available through local bookstores and at Amazon.com. To reserve a space, please contact Betty in the office (ignatius@bc.edu or 617-552-6102). 1. Parishioners who took part in this year's mission trip will talk about their work with the people of St. Anne's, our sister parish, and share their experiences serving the poor and co-laboring as an intergenerational group. Hear what they have to say about Christian unity and Christian community as lived realities in Jamaica. Come on either Sunday (or both!) and bring a friend. As Bob Marley says : "Let's get together and feel all right!" The Novena of Grace The Jesuits of Boston College will be conducting the Novena of Grace of St. Francis Xavier between March 4 and March 12. Young Jesuits preparing for the priesthood will conduct the Novena at St. Columbkille in Brighton, St. Mary of the Assumption in Brookline and here at St. Ignatius. The Novena will take place at all three parishes, on a rotating basis, at 7:15 each evening. All novena evenings will include a reflection offered by a Jesuit and the Rosary, benediction or Mass. Each year, on the last Sunday before Lent, we burn the palm branches blessed on the prior Palm Sunday, to be used at the services on Ash Wednesday. On the weekends of February 22nd-23rd and March 1st2nd, there will be baskets at the entrances of the church for you to place these branches, so that they can be gathered up and burned before the 5:30 Liturgy on March 2nd. You are also welcome to join us for a brief prayer service on the front steps of the church at 5:10 p.m, before the palms are committed to the flames. BOOK DISCUSSION On March 23rd at 11:15, there will be a discussion in the living room of the parish office. This month’s book is Jesus of Nazareth: What He Wanted, Who He Was by Gerhard Lohfink. New Testament scholar, Daniel Harrington, S.J. described Lohfink’s book as “the best Jesus book I know.” Given the recommendation, we hope you might take the time to read “the best Jesus book" and join the discussion on March 23rd. All are welcome. 2. The study begins on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:15 pm in the Lannon Chapel. The cost is $23.00, which includes a commentary, study guide and video presentation of the study. CHILDREN’S BOOK SALE TO BENEFIT “THE FREE WHEELCHAIR MISSION” Long-time St. Ignatius parishioner, Ellen Gaffney, has produced a children’s book to benefit The Free Wheelchair Mission (FWM), a non-profit organization based in Irvine CA. For ten years, FWM has been providing wheelchairs at no cost to people in developing countries who are both physically disabled and very poor. They have given away over 700,000 specially-designed, low-cost wheelchairs (currently $71.88) in over 85 countries, allowing people to stop crawling on the ground, and easing the burden on their families. The picture book, called “Wings for a Flower,” tells the true story of Lotus Blossom, one of the first four people to receive one of these chairs. Lotus is unable to walk, but an unexpected gift inspires a new hope and determination in her. It’s a story about the power of a small gift coupled with a child’s strength, appropriate for all ages. The book is available for $16.95 directly from the website: www.wingsofaflower.com. All proceeds from sales of the first print run of the book will go to FWM to provide mobility to people who need it. LENTEN MOVIE NIGHT Have you ever wondered what Pope Francis’ favorite movie is? It is a perfect movie for Lent, and an opportunity to reflect on the Pope’s new apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). The movie is Babette’s Feast. The Spiritual Life Commission will present a showing of this Danish film, which earned an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and a Golden Globe among other awards. The film explores the meaning of self-gift, and a face of the Eucharist through the very human action of sharing a meal. We will begin with a bite to eat in the Friary Room immediately following the 4:00pm Vigil Mass on Saturday, March 15 from 5:15-8:30pm, and then proceed to watch the film, ending with dessert and a shared reflection and discussion. Please RSVP for a food estimate to Pepe Ruiz, SJ <pepe@jesuits.net>, or to the Parish’s front desk: (617) 552-6102. THE FOUNDATIONS IN IGNATIAN PRAYER PROGRAM will be continuing for Part II on the following Sunday afternoons from 4:00 - 5:15 in the Lower Church: February 23rd, March 16th, March 30th, April 6th and April 27th. Join us to deepen your experience of Ignatian Prayer. 4.
