On Sunday, May 3rd, tens of thousands of people raised both hunger awareness and much-needed dollars to help combat hunger in our state. As the largest public fundraising walk in the Commonwealth, the Walk for Hunger is a powerful example of what's possible when we join forces to create, advocate for, and support meaningful change. However, we need to keep in mind that the Walk for Hunger is only one means of support for Project Bread’s year ‘round work to assist those who are food insecure. As of today, Team Ignatius has raised over $3500. You can still make a donation to the Walk or to Project Bread in general, by going to www.projectbread.org. THANK YOU for your generosity in our clothing drive for St. Francis House Day Shelter. HABITAT GOLDEN HAMMER AWARD: Each year, Habitat Greater Boston recognizes the efforts of a few outstanding contributors to its mission. Habitat is grateful for the work of all the volunteers and contributors, but Golden Hammer Award recipients have gone above and beyond, devoting their talents and time with a generosity of spirit that is extraordinary. For over twenty years, Anton Finelli has been organizing build teams of St. Ignatius parishioners. Through Anton’s tireless efforts, many of us have had the rewarding experience of building 1 Habitat homes in partnership with low-income families. Thank you, Anton, one of this year’s Golden Hammer Award recipients. Happy Mother’s Day! Dear Parishioners, I received this request from Judy and Fred Basilico, physicians and long-time St Ignatius parishioners. If you are looking for ways to help the people of Nepal you might consider this: As we try to determine how to help the crisis in Nepal, we know that there are many organizations that are working to meet the needs of the Nepali people. We have worked with HealthCare Nepal for the last 16 years. Many people have contacted us about our Nepali colleagues and also asked about ways to help. I am happy to report that all of our team of physicians and their families suffered no casualties. Jack Starmer, the founder and head of our organization, was in Kathmandu when the earthquake hit. He had just returned from a health camp in far western Nepal. He was able to contact us by phone the first day to report on the situation. Our trustworthy team is intact. Our school in Koshidekha was built to be earthquake proof and has withstood the initial quake and a series of aftershocks. The village where it is located suffered major damage. All village homes were destroyed. The school is now being used as a shelter for the local community. We have already donated funds to help with basic needs and will need more funding to help in this effort. Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), a 1000 bed hospital, is operational and overwhelmed with injured patients. In the past we have supported the creation of the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. We need to continue funding supplies for these units. Dr. Deepak Mahara, an orthopedist and a founding member of our HealthCare Nepal team, is the head of this university hospital. We have worked with him for 16 years. He has stayed at our home for 3 months in the past when we hosted him and other physicians for advanced training. We know that he will greatly appreciate any donations to assist with purchasing medical supplies for TUTH to help meet this crisis. Every dollar counts. The annual income there is about $700, so the purchasing power is tremendous. $10 will purchase $100 goods and services. It is important to know how any donation is magnified in the impoverished economy of Nepal. HealthCare Nepal’s track record for tight responsible management comes down to this: 96.5 cents on the dollar has gone to program services in Nepal. You can make a donation by going to the web site: www.healthcarenepal.org where you can make a contribution by credit card, or send a check to: HealthCare Nepal Box 4455 George School 1690 Newtown Langhorne Road Newtown, Pa. 18940-0909 Sincerely, Fr. Bob ** Please note, we are also taking up a collection this weekend to support the efforts of the Jesuits in Nepal. 2 NEWTON FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS INTERFAITH CONCERT Mark your Calendars.
