While funds to repair this particular buttress are included in Fr. Bob’s wish list, they will only partially cover the cost to repair this and other structural issues. The picture below is an up close of the severe crack in the buttress. Over time, the mortar between the stones has weakened and eroded, allowing water to seep in and cause further damage into this areas of the church, both internally and externally. While we have been able to fund many needed smaller repairs to the church over the past 5 years, the church has significant repairs coming in the next three to five years. The money raised from the legacy fund will be considered a “down payment” on the cost of the buttress, since that is the most important repair that needs to be made. In the coming years, we will likely be launching a capital campaign similar to the one that the parish funded a decade ago. An engineering/architectural study conducted in 2011 identified several necessary structural repairs to the church . 4:00 pm Sunday, April 24 Vivian Panariello Mary Dafarra 10:00 am 5:30 pm ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Reading Group Reunion with Frs. Bob and JA Before Frs. Bob and JA leave the parish at the end of May, they would like to have a ‘reading group’ reunion, with a discussion of one of the chapters of Pope Francis Exhortation, The Joy of Love. (Chapter TBA). If you have ever come to 130 Beacon St. for discussions on various books and authors, you are welcome to come for a social evening and discussion on Wednesday evening, April 27 at 7pm. If you are interested in coming please email Fr. Bob at frvereec@bc.edu. Book Discussion On Sunday, May 22 at 11:15 am, there will be a discussion of the book Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor by James J. O'Connell. Boston Globe columnist Thomas Farragher describes this book as “a remarkable collection of raw and real tales about Dr. O’Connell’s homeless patients and the stories they’ve entrusted to him.” Another reviewer calls this book “one of the best books about homeless Americans that has ever been published. Dr. O’Connell sounds a wakeup call that pricks the conscience: Am I my brother’s keeper?" Please join our discussion of this book on May 22 in the Parish Office. Walking on the Ignatius Way! Get more insight into the readings you hear at Mass Join us for Pasta & Prayer, a prayerful conversation with friends over dinner to discuss the Sunday scriptures. Feed your body, mind and soul! Bob and Fr. JA for their service to our parish community: I write to you thinking about the last twenty-five years of being here and my ministry among and with you. It was not until I surveyed all the events we have shared, that I realized how meaningful the time and scope of my time among you has been. I recall the words of the little closing song of Carol Burnett, sung at the end of her shows: "I'm so glad we had this time together". We have shared many moments of joy, sorrow and growth. To consider that I have spent approximately one third of my life here is an amazing revelation. When people comment on my, and our, Music Ministry here, I always tell them we could not offer what we do, were it not for the generosity and talent of so many. I believe this applies to all the ministries here. The depth and scope of them is inclusive and wide reaching. After much prayer, discernment and thought, I have decided to move on to the next phase of life and career: a state of semiretirement. While I know this adds another aspect to the transitions already underway, I decided it is a good time for me to do the same. The plan is that my last day here will be July 31. I suppose that is appropriate and especially meaningful because it is the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola. I will remember you in my prayers, as I hope for a good transition and times to follow, here. I would ask for your prayers, as well, as I move on. I close with another quote, from a familiar Irish Blessing: "And may God hold you in the palm of His Hand." Peace, Timothy Associate Director of Music/Organist Transition Team Update On Sunday, April 24th, and on the weekend of April 30th/May 1st, members of the St. Ignatius Transition Team are looking forward to having a conversation with any members of the parish who are interested in dialoguing about our transition from the pastoral leadership of Frs. For details and RSVP, go to http://BostonCatholicClimate.org. Don't Stay Where You Are Tolerated. Go Where You are Celebrated! – the RCIA! We now have an ongoing, year-round process (called RCIA) for adults who are interested in learning about the Catholic faith and being baptized and adults who would like to transfer their Church membership to the Catholic Church. Come to ask questions, learn from others who are seekers of meaning, and meet some compassionate people who want to take their faith more seriously, just are not sure what that faith looks like yet. We will meet at different times during the summer for community building fun events - like hiking, biking, camping, beach going, painting, or whatever. We also will meet several times a month at the 5:30pm mass for the 1st part of the Mass (Liturgy of the Word) and then we will be dismissed to go to the chapel for further study on the Sunday's scripture reading. Interested? Contact Diana.Gaillardetz@bc.edu, or 419-2907101. St. Ignatius Welcomes our newest Catholic member Eric Swanson! Eric has been attending the RCIA process and learning more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Although he had been baptized as an infant in another Christian denomination and faithfully attended his Church, his experience at Boston College and especially his involvement in the service program ARRUPE, helped with his decision to enter into full communion within the Catholic Church. Eric offered his profession of faith in front of the 4pm mass congregation last Saturday. Congratulations also go to Bethany Augustoni and Van Nguyen who have taken the first step toward their Baptisms. Bethany and Van have expressed their desire to enter the Church and we have accepted them as catechumens at the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens. For Bethany who has spent her life attending the Catholic church, her Baptism will come soon. Van has just recently joined the RCIA and will be on the journey toward Baptism at the Easter Vigil with our other Catechumens: Justin, Liz, Vannepha, and Jenny. Please keep all of our seekers in your prayers. Newcomers are welcome to join the RCIA. The Ignatian Way in the Year of Mercy From Advent to Pentecost, A Journey with St. Ignatius of Loyola El Camino Ignaciano en el Año de la Misericordia Del Adviento a Pentecostés, Una Jornada con San Ignacio de Loyola Easter Season La Pascua Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.” Reflection The Fourth Sunday of Easter is always a variation on the theme of the Good Shepherd. At the heart of this image is Jesus’ knowledge of each and every one of us. We are invited into a remarkable experience of intimacy with Jesus, one that is similar to his relationship with the Father. The Life of Ignatius Throughout the Spiritual Exercises, Ignatius invites us to reflect on this extraordinary intimacy we can have with Jesus. At the heart of Ignatian Spirituality is knowing and being known, loving and being loved, serving and being served. Everything with God in Jesus Christ is about mutuality. Questions for Reflection How close do I feel to Jesus? Do I believe that he knows and loves me as I am? What are the ways in which I recognize his voice in my life? Video Reflection, For the Greater Glory As you reflect on this question, you are invited to review For The Greater Glory, the dance/theater piece on the Spiritual Exercises, created by Fr. Bob. View the Fourth Week of the Exercises. 1 hour and 10 minute mark.
