Reading Group Reunion with Frs. Bob and JA Before Frs. Bob and JA leave the parish at the end of May, they would like to have a ‘reading group’ reunion, with a discussion of one of the chapters of Pope Francis Exhortation, The Joy of Love. (Chapter TBA). If you have ever come to 130 Beacon St. for discussions on various books and authors, you are welcome to come for a social evening and discussion on Wednesday evening, April 27 at 7pm. If you are interested in coming please email Fr. Bob at frvereec@bc.edu. For several months now, there has been mention in the bulletin regarding repair of the buttress on the Commonwealth Avenue side of the church. Buttress is an exterior support projecting from a wall that is used to resist the sideways force, also called thrust, created by the load on an arch or roof. Its name was first adopted into English as "butres" in the 14th century. Relatively soon, "buttress" came to be used figuratively for anything that supports or strengthens something else. In addition, it was also in the 14th century that "buttress" was first used as a verb meaning "to support or strengthen," literally and figuratively. While funds to repair this particular buttress are included in Fr. Bob’s wish list, they will only partially cover the cost to repair this and other structural issues. The picture below is an up close of the severe crack in the buttress. Over time, the mortar between the stones has weakened and eroded, allowing water to seep in and cause further damage into this areas of the church, both internally and externally. While we have been able to fund many needed smaller repairs to the church over the past 5 years, the church has significant repairs coming in the next three to five years. The money raised from the legacy fund will be considered a “down payment” on the cost of the buttress, since that is the most important repair that needs to be made. In the coming years, we will likely be launching a capital campaign similar to the one that the parish funded a decade ago. An engineering/architectural study conducted in 2011 identified several necessary structural repairs to the church . Book Discussion On Sunday, May 22 at 11:15 am, there will be a discussion of the book Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor by James J. O'Connell. Boston Globe columnist Thomas Farragher describes this book as “a remarkable collection of raw and real tales about Dr. O’Connell’s homeless patients and the stories they’ve entrusted to him.” Another reviewer calls this book “one of the best books about homeless Americans that has ever been published. Dr. O’Connell sounds a wakeup call that pricks the conscience: Am I my brother’s keeper?" Please join our discussion of this book on May 22 in the Parish Office. The Ignatian Way in the Year of Mercy From Advent to Pentecost, A Journey with St. Ignatius of Loyola El Camino Ignaciano en el Año de la Misericordia Del Adviento a Pentecostés, Una Jornada con San Ignacio de Loyola Easter Season La Pascua I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Reflection At the heart of our Christian identity is the command to “love one another as Christ has loved us”. That is not an easy command to obey. Our human nature is such that it holds onto hurts and offenses and it is difficult to let go and love the other. It is helpful to remember, though, that the call to love comes from One who has loved us completely and without reservation or condition. The Life of Ignatius In the fourth week of the Spiritual Exercises, Ignatius gives us the “Contemplation on Attaining Divine Love”. This is the high point of the Exercises and sums up all that has gone before. In this contemplation he gives two “preludes”: It is well to notice two things: the first is that love ought to be put more in deeds than in words. The second is that love consists in interchange between the two parties; that is to say in the lover's giving and communicating to the beloved what he or she has out of what he or she has or can give. Questions for Reflection How willing am I to let go of past hurts and offenses and love as Christ has commanded me to love as his disciple? Video Reflection, For the Greater Glory As you reflect on this question, you are invited to review For The Greater Glory, the dance/theater piece on the Spiritual Exercises, created by Fr. Bob. View the Fourth Week of the Exercises. 1 hour and 10 minute mark. You can access the video at www.blde.org or americamedia.org/ignatian-dance ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! April 24 ~ Fifth Sunday of Easter Paul and Barnabas tell the other disciples, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” The Church is undergoing many hardships today, too. What will turn the tide? In 51 words from today’s Gospel – a bit longer than a Tweet - Jesus gives a simple command: “…I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” Ah, but here’s the rub, it may not be as simple as it sounds. Read carefully: “As I have loved you…” Jesus is ‘kicking it up a notch’. Not just love one another, but love as He loves. This can be hard work, and it may take practice, but here’s the payoff, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Saint Ignatius of Loyola 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill MA 02467 Phone: 617-552-6100 !
