Mobile Employment Trends For the year ending 2012 This annual report contains a profile of Mobile employment for the 2012 year and previous periods. It contains the 10 industrial categories reported regularly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The purpose is to provide a central source of employment data that may be used as reference, and to encourage consistency in the figures reported by all interested users. Additional data has been added on the Mobile unemployment rate, number unemployed, percent change in unemployment, number employed, and percent change in civilian labor force. A further breakdown of Mobile employment into the top 20 NAICS categories has been added for additional detail. This data is ranked first, by number of jobs, and second, by individual income. It comes from the local input-output table maintained by Economic Modeling Systems. This table includes the latest U.S. and Alabama information. Mobile County's and Alabama's unemployment rates were below the national average from 2007 to 2008. In 2009, both rates were above the average from entire country. Currently, the state of Alabama has risen above the national rate for October, 2012. Mobile's unemployment rate has decreased from 9.5 percent in 2011 to 8.7 percent in 2012. Mobile County's unemployment rate has recovered some, but there is still room for improvement because it is above the country average. The national average, state of Alabama, and Mobile County have seen decreases in the unemployment rates from October 2011 to October 2012. This number moved in the opposite direction from the state. Alabama's number employed went from 1,992,528 to 1,985,592, a 0.35% decrease. However, Alabama increased in the number employed from September 2012 to October 2012 at 0.44 percent. Mobile also saw improvements in the number employed from September 2012 to October 2012 at 1.44 percent. From 2009 to 2012, Alabama has had larger swings in the percent change in the number of employed, while Mobile has seen moderate changes and grew more than Alabama for October 2012 compared to last month and last year. In the month of October, both Alabama and Mobile's Civilian Labor Force increased by thousands compared to September. In Alabama for October 2012, the percent change was negative 0.84% compared to last year, but it was 0.28% relative to last month. The Civilian Labor Force for Alabama in October was 2,160,459. In addition, Mobile's Civilian Labor Force was 193,785 for October 2012. In the month of November, both Alabama and Mobile's Education & Health Services workers rose, but at a slower rate from the previous year. In Alabama for November 2012, the percent change was 0.96% from last year and it was 0.23% relative to last month. The Civilian Labor Force for Education & Health Services in November was 219,900 for Alabama & 24,300 for Mobile. From November 2011 to November 2012, both Alabama and Mobile's Financial Activities Civilian Labor Forces rose. In Alabama for November 2012, the percent change was 2.05% from last year and it was -0.11% relative to last month. The Civilian Labor Force for Financial Activities in November was 94,600 for Alabama and 10,800 for Mobile. From November 2010 to November 2012, both Alabama's and Mobile's Government Labor Force has decreased. In Alabama for November 2012, the percent change was -2.37% compared to last year and it was -0.22% relative to last month. The Civilian Labor Force for the Government in November was 366,900 for Alabama and 26,000 for Mobile. In addition, it has not grown from October 2012. The Civilian Labor Force for Information workers is 2,100 people. On the other hand, Alabama's Civilian Labor Force for Information workers has had larger fluctuations. From November 2011 to November 2012, it dropped 6.93% in Alabama & 0.46% in Mobile. The Civilian Labor Force for Information in November was 21,500 for Alabama & 2,100 for Mobile. Alabama's and Mobile's Leisure & Hospitality Labor Force does not have a regular pattern. In Alabama, the Leisure & Hospitality Labor Force for November 2012 was a 2.07 percent change compared to last year and it was a -0.92 percent change relative to last month. The Civilian Labor Force for the Government in November was 172,300 for Alabama and 15,200 for Mobile. Alabama's and Mobile's Manufacturing Labor Force have increased since at least November 2010. In Alabama, the Manufacturing Labor Force for November 2012 was a 3.43 percent change compared to last year and it was a 0.86 percent change relative to last month.
