To be considered for residency reclassification approval, the appropriate office must receive all supporting documentation by the
Friday before the first class day of the semester.
Early application is strongly encouraged
Residency Reclassification Applications will not be accepted until a student has been admitted or

Automatic Qualifiers for Resident Status - If you meet one of the following criteria, you may automatically be considered a
resident of Alabama or the Service Area. You must submit proof of the qualifier selected below.
* Minor Students are those students who lack the capacity to contract under the law of the State of Alabama because of their age
(persons under 19 years of age or persons under 18 years of age if married) excluding those persons who disabilities of nonage have been removed by a court of competent jurisdiction for a reason other than establishing a legal residence in Alabama.
One who, at the time of registration, does not meet the above definition of a minor*, provides:
a letter from a University of South Alabama department showing employment as a graduate assistant or fellow at the
University of South Alabama; or
a letter from an employer(on company letterhead), including hiring date and employer contact information, that verifies
full-time permanent employment within the state of Alabama or the Service Area or verifying that employment begins
not more than 90 days after the first day of classes, or the student is the spouse of such an employee; or
a copy of current military orders showing full-time active duty assignment for the United States military in Alabama or
the Service Area for duties other than attending school or the student is the spouse of such a member of the military; or
paystubs or letter from commanding officer showing membership in the Alabama National Guard for a period of at
least two years immediately preceding the student qualifying for resident tuition and continues to be a member of
the Alabama National Guard while enrolled at the University of South Alabama; or
a letter from the student's home state entity responsible for administering Academic Common Market agreement; or
official documentation showing the student is an accredited member of or the spouse of an accredited member of a
consular staff assigned to duties in Alabama; or
One who, at the time of registration, meets the above referenced definition of a minor* and whose "supporting person(s)" can
provide:
a letter from an employer(on company letterhead), including hiring date and employer contact information, that verifies
full-time permanent employment within the state of Alabama or the Service Area or verifying that employment begins
not more than 90 days after the first day of classes, or that the supporting person is the spouse of such an employee;
or
a copy of current military orders showing full-time active duty assignment for the United States military in Alabama or
the Service Area for duties other than attending school or is the spouse of such a member of the military; or
official documentation showing the supporting person is an accredited member of or that the supporting person is the
spouse of an accredited member of a consular staff assigned to duties in Alabama; or
evidence that the supporting person is a resident of any county within University of South Alabama's Service Area and
has been a resident of that county for at least one year immediately preceding the date of registration.
If you do not automatically qualify for reclassification, you must meet the requirements on the following page.
A "resident student" for tuition purposes is one who, at the time of admission to the university, is not a minor* or a
"resident student" who is a minor* but whose "supporting person(s)" can provide the appropriate documentation.

SUBSTANTIAL CONNECTION MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THIS FORM.*
To be considered for residency reclassification approval, the Registrar's Office must receive all supporting
documentation by the application deadline.
Required documentation (for student or supporting person)
First two pages of most recent Federal Tax return showing residence in Alabama or any county within the University
Service Area (Mississippi: George, Greene, Harrison, Jackson, Perry or Stone Counties; Florida: Escambia or Santa Rosa
Counties). All applicable signatures must be included.

Valid Alabama or Service Area Driver License or other State issued ID reflecting permanent residence
Check all that apply but must have a minimum of three forms of documentation for application to be considered
for reclassification of residency for tuition purposes. Additional documentation may be required.
Copy of title of ownership of personal property in the State of Alabama or Service Area (e.g. automobile, boat, etc.) and
possession of state license plates (by providing proof of tax receipt/current registration/auto, boat, etc. title.)
Copy of current bank statement or letter showing banking services Alabama or Service Area, (must show both checking and
savings accounts, but may also include safe deposit boxes, and/or investment accounts)
Copy of state or local licenses to do business or practice a profession in the State of Alabama or Service Area
Copy of high school diploma or final high school transcript from Alabama or Service Area
Official military form documenting Alabama or the Service Area as the home state of record and visual verification by the
Registrar's Office of your Military ID (home of record is not necessarily the same as state of residency)
Official military form or a letter from the commanding officer showing that a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States
and satisfies one of the following conditions:
DoD Form 214 showing that the veteran has served on active duty for a continuous period of time, not less
than two years, and has received an honorable discharge within five years of enrolling at the University of
South Alabama; or
A memorandum from the commanding officer of the veteran student showing that the veteran is currently
serving in a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States; or
DoD Form 214 showing the veteran has been assigned a service-connected disability by the United States
Department of Veterans Affairs

*Note: This list is not meant to be all inclusive and merely describes examples of supporting evidence which may be considered
in the determination of whether a student has more substantial connections with the State of Alabama or Service Area
than any other state. Supplying such supporting evidence does not guarantee reclassification as a resident but allows the
university to assess each situation and apply Alabama law accordingly.
