$35,895 - $55,637 (starting salary is $35,895.00 per year)

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work; or a Bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited school
of social work and completion of the Child Welfare Collaborative (Child Welfare positions only);Bachelor’s Degree in social
work from an accredited school of social work and one year directly related experience; Master’s degree in a human services
field and one year of directly related experience; Bachelor’s degree in a human services field from an accredited college or
university and two years directly related experience; Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and three
years of directly related experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices, and their application to complex casework, group
work, and community problems. Considerable knowledge of a wide range of medical, behavioral, and/or psychosocial
problems and their treatment theory. Considerable knowledge of family and group dynamics and a range of intervention
techniques, governmental and private organizations, and resources in the community, laws, regulations, and policies which
govern the program; General knowledge of the methods and principles of casework supervision and training. In certain
settings, considerable knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and their treatment as they relate to decisions
regarding clinical interventions and appropriate therapies based on medical or psychological diagnosis. Skill in establishing
rapport with a client and in applying techniques or assessing psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological aspects of client’s
problems. Ability to supervise, train, or instruct lower-level social workers, students, or interns in the program. Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of caseload and their families, as well as civic, legal,
medical, social, and religious organizations. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work
effectively.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Responsible for assessing the risk of harm to children alleged to be abused, neglected, or dependent within the mandated
timeframes using a family centered practice approach. This approach focuses on the goal of preserving or reunifying the
family, or achieving permanent placement in another family.
Day to day duties include, but are not limited to: receive reports of child abuse, neglect, or dependency; conduct
assessments and home evaluations to determine the extent of the abuse/neglect/dependency and risk of harm to the
child(ren); interview children, parents, guardians, caretakers, collaterals; visits to homes / schools; counsel / engage families
to assess child safety; develop and implement protection service plans that best meet the safety, well-being, and
permanency needs of the child(ren); provide preventive services to ensure children can remain in their own homes if
possible; arrange placement outside the home when removal of the child(ren) is necessary; monitor placements; prepare
court reports; testify in court; maintain effective verbal / written communication with schools, mental health, medical and
other professionals regarding the needs of the child and the family; Coordinate / make referrals for needed services; work
with law enforcement and the judicial system. Documentation of cases must be extremely accurate.
Worker in this position often works outside of the normal workday hours. Worker in this position will serve on CALL DUTY
nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled, to receive and/or investigate protective services reports.
Working in shelters and performing other areas of assistance in case of disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the
citizens of Bertie County is also a responsibility of this position. Responsible for any other duties assigned by the
supervisor or director.

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid NC Driver’s License
Worker must complete a required 72-hours minimum of Pre-Service Training before direct client contact and 39 additional
hours within the first year of employment.
PREFERENCES:
MSW or BSW through the NC Welfare Collaborative
