DEPARTMENT CHANGES, 2013-2014 Type (from Description of Change menu) Facilities/ Transitioned H 339 from a traditional Space classroom to the Academic Literacy Smart class room H-339 In addition to his regular duties in H239, the ALLC CLT took on additional responsibility of setting-up the Academic Literacy H339 Smart class room in the summer of 2013. During this task, he deployed 27 HP 8300 model PC’s, imaged the computers, secured computers with security locks, re-imaged sympodium computer and deployed the HP LaserJet 600 printer. He also created the Smart class room policies to insure computer lab safety and security. In order to complete this project in a timely fashion for the fall semester, on some occasions the ALLC CLT remained extra hours to complete his work. Once the H339 Smart class room was implemented, the ALLC CLT continued to manage the following tasks and responsibilities: • Resolved all hardware and software issues • Assisted student and faculty/staff users regarding the use of supported software applications and hardware • Provided instructional support on equipment use Reason for Change Improve and increase the delivery of curriculum content through technology to students enrolled in Academic Literacy courses Date/ Semester Summer 2013, Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 Evaluation of Change* Met expectations . Expanded the use of instructional technology to support Academic Literacy curriculum and students; Provided an improved delivery of instruction for the various ALLC interventions 5 Queensborough Community College Service Non-teaching Department Implement STARFISH During the summer of 2013, The ALLC CLT took the lead initiative and additional responsibility for setting up the ALLC on Starfish. He scheduled a time to meet with Starfish administrator to explain the ALLC legacy student tracking system and together they modified the new system for the learning center. Using this design, the CLT took responsibility for implementing the new set-up by completing numerous steps: • Requested IT to setup staff email accounts • Requested Starfish administrator to setup staff Starfish user accounts • Completed user and system testing • Trained learning center staff on Starfish use • Developed and ran STARFISH workshops for staff • Provided individual STARFISH training • Tested and installed Kiosk swipe for H239 front desk • Configured 14 Chrome Book (laptops) for tutors to use for STARFISH tracking and placed them in the laptop cart to secure them. Improve student retention 2013-2014 Academic Year Summer 2013, Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 Improved student awareness of the Academic Literacy Learning Center services. Provided feedback to AL faculty on their students’ usage of the Academic Literacy Learning Center interventions . Provided tracking of student usage of the ALLC. Once Starfish was implemented, the CLT continued the following tasks during Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters: • Requested IT personnel to setup staff email accounts • Added staff into Starfish Table Builder App 6 Queensborough Community College Non-teaching Department 2013-2014 Academic Year • Equipment Requested Starfish administrator to setup ALLC staff user accounts. • Provided individual training for faculty and staff • Created scheduling containers for Starfish Computer Lab staff • Resolved all Starfish hardware and software issues • Retrieved data from Starfish Reporting Tool • Assisted ALLC Director with Starfish related reports. • Attended Starfish meetings. The ALLC CLT also managed the following activities: • Created appointments, added students, attendance and speed notes: o Computer lab Walk-Ins o Small Group Tutoring o Reading Reviews o Writing Reviews o BE12 NC Workshop o BE17 Multiple Repeaters Reading o BE18 Multiple Repeaters Writing o Lower Level Reading o Lower Level Writing • Referrals Commenting/closing the loop on Starfish Purchased Servers: Virtualization technology H343 ALLC’s two outdated servers were replaced with a new server. Initially the server sent by the vendor was not functioning properly. The hard disk had latency issues. After a month of troubleshooting, the ALLC CLT was able to negotiate a second server free of charge from the vendor. Once the server was operational, the latest Vmware Virtualization Technology was implemented. Currently, the first server is used as a domain controller. The second server is used as an FOG Image server. The old servers were obsolete. Lacked hard disk space and were not under warranty. Summer 2013, Fall 2014 and Spring 2014 Improved the functioning of the ALLC software. 7 Queensborough Community College Equipment Equipment Equipment Equipment Non-teaching Department 2013-2014 Academic Year Pharos Printing The implementation and the use of Pharos printing was another addition to the ALLC CLT’s job responsibility. The CLT worked with the IT department to setup two printing release stations, and he added the Pharos software to the computer image, trained his staff and manually added first time student users into the system. Once Pharos was implemented, he assumed the responsibilities, for the following: • Train faculty, staff and students on Pharos printing station usage • Adding new users onto the system • Resolve any hardware and software issues. Re-Imaged 96 computers in H239 Transitioning to this system allows the ALLC to be conservative with the paper that is allocated to it. Fall 2013 Provided for more efficient use of printing. The AL Department suggested that these students may be negatively impacting the pass rate on exit. To provide added support to this cohort, the AL Department implemented multiple repeater (MR) interventions through the Academic Literacy Learning Center. Various permutations of these workshops began in Fall 2013, became institutionalize d through CUNYFirst in January 2014, and continued through the Spring 2014 and June 2014 semesters. *Please note that, if change has been too recent to evaluate, you may indicate NA. During the spring 2014 semester, the pass rate for students who attended these reviews was 60%. This pass rate was higher than the departmental pass rate (58%) for all BE 122/226 students who tested the ACT COMPASS Reading Exam in spring.
