The Academic Literacy Learning Center (ALLC) provides course mandated and course nonmandated reading, writing, study skills, ePortfolio, and academic service-learning project support to Queensborough Community College students who are enrolled in Academic Literacy courses so that these students exit remediation and enroll in gateway courses in a timely manner. Faculty received emails concerning the scheduling of CATW interventions. At faculty suggestion, the interventions were increased from 3-2 hour sessions to 4- 2 hour sessions. The Adjunct supervisor marketed them to adjuncts. In the fall of 2012, 110 (18.1%) upper level students attended a CATW writing intervention. 29 BE 112 students passed at 62% rate; 81 BE 205 students passed at a 37% rate. The overall pass rate for both groups is 44.0%. In spring 2013,78 (16.3%) of upper level students attended a CATW intervention. 19 BE 112 students passed at a 48% pass rate; 22 BE 205 students passed at a 37% pass rate. The combined pass rate was 40.0%. CATW support is also provided through small group tutoring sessions. Fall 2012 Surveymonkey result reported 93.5% of students’ respondents to find small group tutoring sessions helpful in preparing them for their course work; Only 9.5% of students who responded to this survey commented that they were mandated by their professors to attend tutoring. July 2013 and implement writing activities that address sentence structure. Students in this intervention posted higher pass rates that all students who exit tested. Therefore, continue to promote this intervention to the upper level writing students. Encourage attendance at all CATW sessions. Students who register for these CATW interventions tend to drop in and drop out; do not attend all of the sessions. The AL Dept. Chair has directed that students attending these interventions in the coming academic year will only receive credit for attendance if they come to every session. Since a number of students in the upper level writing courses are multiple repeaters of these courses, collaborate support services that are targeted specifically for this student. 14 Queensborough Community College Number of AL faculty incorporating an ASL peer mentoring model Four AL Faculty will explore an ASL peer mentoring model Registration for ACT COMPASS 9-session reading reviews 15% of students enrolled in BE 122 and 15% of students enrolled in BE 226 will register for a 9-session ACT COMPASS reading review Non-teaching Department The remaining students responded that they selfdirected themselves to the support service. 93.5% responded that they would either strongly recommend or recommend other students to the ALLC. The CATW online review was used by over 80 students. Exceeded expectations. The AL Department supports the peer mentoring model and the majority of classes were paired in both the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters. Exceeded expectation. BE 122 and BE 226 faculty received emails that asked them to encourage their students to attend reading reviews. Tutors set up appointments for in-class registrations. Evidence based results were shared by the Department Deputy Chair at departmental meetings. Specifically the Dept. Deputy Chair reported that internal results appear to indicate that students participating in reading reviews July 2013 Since the AL Department has incorporated this process into its best practices, the ALLC will continue to provide ancillary support at faculty request. Completed Continue to promote, advertise, and encourage student participation in these interventions. Schedule class visitations that will promote onsite registration for these interventions. The 2012-13 academic year reflected an almost 80% increase in student participation in the reading reviews from the 2012-12 academic year. This increased participation may have influenced the increased pass rate on exit from Continuing 15 Queensborough Community College Exit-fromremediation pass rates of students in reading reviews BE reading students who attend a 9-session Health Related Academy reading review will post exitfrom-remediation pass rates that are higher than all BE reading students who attend a 9-seesion reading review. Non-teaching Department have a higher pass rate than the total number of students who take the exit exam. In fall of 2012 , 284 ( 41.1%) of BE 122 and BE 226 students registered; a total of 244 (40.1%) attended one of 51, 9-hour reading review. 135 BE 122 students recorded t a 54% pass rate; 109 BE 226 students recorded a 46% pass rate. During the spring 2013 semester, a total of 188 (31.3%) of students enrolled in one of 29, 9hour reading review. 94 BE 122 students recorded a 48% pass rate; 88 BE 226 students recorded a 37% pass rate. Over 129 students registered and used the online ACT COMPASS Reading Review. Met expectation. AL Department were told of the higher pass rates of students who participate in a discipline specific review session. This outcome has been shared at Freshman Academy meetings. In Fall 2012, 14 students registered and attended a 9- July 2013 remediation during this past academic year. Students who participate in a discipline specific reading review sessions continue to reflect higher pass rates than students who participate in the traditional reading reviews. However, the low recruitment in the spring 2013 semester may indicate less Health Related Academy students enrolled in AL classes. Met As of June 10, the yearly pass rate for this cohort is 64%. 100% of the Surveymonkey respondents found the handouts either very helpful or helpful; 96.1% found the Comfit software program either very helpful or helpful; 88.4% found the Test Your Skills test either very helpful of helpful in identifying strengths and weaknesses. 2 ALLC Computer Lab staff members received clicker training, and clickers were used with the students in the January 2013 and June 2013 workshops. Students with a grade of NC also received a personal phone call the day before the workshop began which reminded them about the workshop.
