Portraits and Keepsake Boxes - Picture me in College Saratoga Family Inn Course Elizabeth DiGiorgio, Drawing I & II, Department of Art and Design Overview Students draw portraits of children from Saratoga Family Inn, add decorative motifs related to the interests of the children, and attach the drawings to keepsake boxes for the children to keep. Course Objectives • apply general rules of portraiture to the specific models sitting before them • develop a greater understanding of drawing as a means of personal expression of both the model and the artist • synthesize their knowledge of their subject/model and present that knowledge in a visually unified way. Interests of Partner Help the Saratoga students to project a positive self-image, to begin to feel comfortable in the college setting and to see college as a stimulating and positive place and a possibility for their futures. Activities Children from Saratoga Family Inn visit the QCC drawing studio. QCC Students converse with the children and together they decide on the pose and decorative motifs. Students draw the portraits from the live models. In subsequent weeks, students add decorative motifs and affix the portraits to keepsake boxes. They also select an aspirational quote to leave in the box. At a final meeting, students present children with their boxes.
