And then there were twelve.
Four years ago, sixteen brave students took the ultimate leap of faith and
joined an untested design program to become Drexel’s inaugural class
of Product Design students. Along the way we lost a few, two students
graduated early and two went on to do other things. Today, the remaining
twelve vigorous students make their way out in the world at the end of
one journey and the start of the next. It is a monumental occasion not
just because of being the first graduating class, but because of the
sheer level of achievement reached during their four years of joy, tears,
sleepless nights, and camaraderie. I can say they made the most of
every moment and left nothing unturned. They are in every way a talented
and exemplary group of humans. I could not be more proud and more
thankful for the commitment they have shown to Drexel University, the
Product Design Program, and each other. I know that this book, which
they funded and produced themselves, is a shining example of their hard
work and achievement. It will stand the test of time and provide the next
generation of students a standard to uphold.
So, it is with a melancholy heart that I bid the class of 2014 a fond
adieu and a bright future. Nous allons tellement vous manquez.

Lumiware helps people with Seasonal Affective Disorder by
providing light therapy glasses that fit into their unique lifestyles.
The idea of projecting light this close to your eyes sounds
completely insane, but artificial light needs to hit your
retina to simulate the effects of sunlight and increase
serotonin levels.

A system that keeps soccer players in their best condition by
helping to prevent injuries in the first place.
Pro-Step system is the combination of a mobile
application and a shoe design. Together they
enhance movement during training to prevent injury
through personalized aid. The smart shoe collects
information regarding the condition of the users
physical status and relays it to the application. The
users are then provided with a personalized program
that describes how to train safely.

The experience design of a make space
inspired by Point Breeze, South Phila.
The idea behind Patch is to generate a community
based in learning and creating. In urban areas like
Point Breeze where changes to the physical existence
breed a host of social reaction, one thing remains:
positive intention allows for sustainable results.
Art Partee Jawn is the design of a night market
experience bringing together unique communities
in Philadelphia for shopping, entertainment, and
socializing. The design of the space strives to blur
the line between art installation and interior decor to
emphasize that design is a way of living.

Fine Motor Skills Development
By covering one of the holes with a finger, music
is heard in only one ear. This creates a cool effect
when switching from ear to ear. Interacting with the
music and tubes works the muscles in the hand,
which develops the users fine motor skills.

An open source shoe design made to exist
outside of the global shoe industry.
Today’s shoe industry makes it difficult for those with
objections about how shoe companies conduct business
to buy ethically produced shoes. Make Shoes is a design
to allow anyone to exist outside of the oppressive, global,
capitalist shoe market.

Spoonfull
Alexa Forney
Spoonfull is self-sufficiency for those who
cannot afford it.
One in twelve Americans is uncertain where their next meal is
coming from. Self-sufficiency – making and growing food at
home – is an alternative, but the low-income users who stand to
benefit from it most are put off by the prohibitive cost of locating
information, and psychological barriers to entry.
Spoonfull makes self-sufficient behaviors easy to access by
placing them right in the neighborhoods where they are needed
most. Kits feature a non-intimidating, simplified graphic style,
and include one specialized ingredient and one information
packet, with the bulk of the recipes using ingredients already
commonly available in the home.

Making our way through Drexel’s Product Design program has been
an enlightening challenge that has informed the ways in which each
of us sees the world and our places in it. We could not have come this
far in our academic and design careers, or in these projects, without
the guidance of the talented design professionals, teachers, and staff
here at Drexel University.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
