The project allows students the opportunity to represent the communities of actual city coun- cil members, while formulating their own positions on legislative issues that affect the quality of life of New York City residents. The 2008 Model Council participants tackled the issue of term limits for NYC elected officials. On October 23, the actual City Council voted 29-22 in favor of extending term limits to 3 terms instead of 2 (Intro 845-). However, the high school students participating in the Model City Council session at City Hall on December 6th, voted 30 to 14 against any extension; there were 7 abstentions, citing conflict of interest and two previous referenda when New Yorkers voted against the extension. The Model City Council runs in the fall of each year. If you are interested, see the liaison at your school to apply.
