Managerial Accounting for Managers, 1st ed., by Noreen, Brewer and Garrison 2. Homework Manager Access Card for Managerial Accounting for Managers We have ordered the access card bundled with the textbook, and you may buy this at the local campus bookstores. If you buy a used textbook somewhere, it will probably not have the Homework Manager access card. The easiest and cheapest way to get it separately is to buy it from the publisher's website. Go to http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/webintegration/WebIntegrationServlet? call=RegistrationHomeWeblet&external=1&isbn=0073526975&chrome=% 2fsites%2f0073526975%2fchrome.vm&goto_url=/sites/0073526975/ information_center_view0/ and follow directions from there to buy and register file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm (1 of 5)8/17/2009 11:47:32 AM file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm the access card. The price for the basic option is $20. If you are interested in having an electronic copy of the text, rather than a hardbound text, you can buy the $65 Homework Manager option instead. This gives you HM access and access to an electronic version of the text that you can retrieve from any laptop or desktop computer. A third option for the text is the eBook from CourseSmart, which is a super product that has a great search engine (very helpful), the capacity to take notes electronically, to highlight text for review, etc. Because it has so many features, the price is a bit more--$93.75 for a 180-day subscription. You can find out more about this, including previewing the book at http://www. coursesmart.com/0077252578. If you choose the CourseSmart eBook, you would need to purchase the Homework Manager access card per the instructions above. Course Objective and Description This is the second introductory accounting course that is required for all students in the Fisher College of Business. Whereas the first course (AMIS 211) focuses on financial accounting and reporting to external parties, this course focuses on managerial accounting. As such, it introduces you to concepts and methods that provide important information managers need to plan and control business operations and to make various business decisions. Also, as one of the sophomore-level business core courses, AMIS 212 provides a foundation for understanding what businesses do and how companies are managed. This particular offering of AMIS 212 follows the first primarily online version of the course that we developed and taught in Summer 2008. I have provided all of the required assignments for the course through the Carmen website There are no recitation sections in the course, as there are now in AMIS 211. We will hold weekly sessions on Fridays at the scheduled time for the course (9:30-11:18 am) in SB 105. These sessions are for our midterm exam on July 24 and review/ Q&A sessions (all other Fridays, except July 3 when the University celebrates July 4--go figure!). We encourage attendance at the review/Q&A sessions, though it is not mandatory. Exams There are two closed-book, live exams in the course, a midterm on July 24 and a final exam on August 27, both from 9:30-11:18 AM in SB 105. The conflict final exam for those who have a final in another course at that time will be Thursday, August 27 from 7:30-9:18 AM in SB 210. Please check your exam schedule early in the quarter, and let me know if you will be taking the conflict exam, rather then the regularly schedule exam. Excused absences from exams file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm (2 of 5)8/17/2009 11:47:32 AM file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm are given only for compelling medical or personal family reasons that must be adequately documented and provided to me within 5 days after the absence. Based on the circumstances, I will then determine the appropriate remedy for the absence. Depending on circumstances, I may require a make-up exam, or I may double the weight of the next exam. If I conclude that the absence is unwarranted, the student will have a score of zero on the missed exam. Homework Assignments As usual in accounting courses. Regular homework practice is essential for learning the material well. As an incentive to practice regularly and well, nine homework assignments are included in the course, one each week. Your eight best scores on these will count (in the aggregate) 20% of your final grade. The homework assignments are exercises and problems from the course text that are delivered through the publisher's Homework Manager online system. Our website for the nine assignments is at http://mh3.brownstone.net/classes/ AMIS212/, You need to purchase an access card to use this system. Once you have the card, register it at the website above. Then you are able to retrieve the assignments, one at a time. You are allowed one attempt for each assignment with deadlines specified for each (on Sunday evenings). There are no exceptions to these assignment deadlines. After the deadline passes, the system grades each submitted assignment and records a score. As noted above, the best eight scores for each student are counted in determining the final course grade. You can then retrieve the feedback that shows you the correct answers and notes each item that you submitted in error. Learn from these inexpensive mistakes to avoid more costly errors on exams. Grading Scores on three components will determine your final grade in the course, using the following weights: First Midterm Exam Final Exam Homework Assignments Weight 40% 40% 20% file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm (3 of 5)8/17/2009 11:47:32 AM file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm Total 100% Your weighted total will translate to final assigned grades as follows: A 90-100% A87-89.9% B+ 84-86.9% B 80-83.9% B77-79.9% C+ 74-76.9% C 70-73.9% C67-69.9% D+ 64-66.9% D 60-63.9% E Below 60% Course Routine Because of the online nature of the course delivery, I have structured the work to facilitate your study routine. The assignment sheet is constructed as a series of To Do list items that you can navigate at your own pace, except for the aforementioned homework deadlines. Each student needs to determine how much time he/she must spend on each item to learn the material. Everything on theses assignment lists is fair game for our three exams. Students With Disabilities If you need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability, you should contact me to arrange an appointment as soon as possible. At the appointment we can discuss the course format, anticipate your needs and explore potential accommodations. We rely on the Office for Disability Services for assistance in verifying the need for accommodations and developing accommodation strategies. If you have not previously contacted the Office for Disability Services, we encourage you to do so. Communication Class announcements and updates will be made on the course webpage continually throughout the quarter, so please check the course webpage frequently Please contact us or our TA when you need help with the class. We are here to help you learn the material. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm (4 of 5)8/17/2009 11:47:32 AM file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm We hope that you enjoy and learn from the class! file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/steiner_134/Desktop/212sylsu09.htm (5 of 5)8/17/2009 11:47:32 AM
