“Recognizing the Spread of Bird Flu” Grade Levels: 3-5 Objectives: HE.3.1.2 Students will list ways to prevent the spread of germs. HE.4.1.2 Students will identify responsible health behaviors to avoid the spread of contagious diseases. HE.5.1.4 Students will describe different organisms (e.g., viruses, bacteria, protozoa, worms, fungi) that cause diseases. Performance Descriptors: Third grade students performing at the mastery level will define ways to prevent the spread of disease . . . Fourth grade students performing at the mastery level will recognize and recall ways to reduce the risk of contagious diseases. Fifth grade students performing at the mastery level will independently describe different organisms that cause disease . . . Materials: Chart paper/Markers Chalkboard Learning Plan: Divide the chalkboard or chart paper into columns. In a column labeled “A,” list past communicable diseases of students and their families. (Answers will include both infectious and non-infectious diseases-Have students determine which are caused by germs and highlight those) In a column labeled “B,” list ways to prevent the spread of the infectious diseases. (examples should include hand washing, covering coughs, etc) Emphasize that avian flu is very rare, but could develop very rapidly and spread from country to county. Discuss what type of medical treatments are necessary (examples may include rest, lots of fluids, quarantine, fever reducing analgesic) Using resources available (phone book, community brochures, etc) have students identify and locate health care sources in their community (they should include doctors, quick care facilities, hospitals) Have students to submit a vaccination history. Ask the school nurse to discuss the need for vaccinations, vaccination schedules and why the bird flu vaccine may not be available.
