Washington State Student Services Commission Conference

1.
Opening Remarks, Introductions
 Participants introduced themselves to the group (for pre-session discussions, see
Addendum)
2. Acknowledgement of Outgoing Officers
President Teresa McDermott presented tokens of appreciation to the following outgoing Board
Members for their service to the CESC:
 Brian Davidson – Past President
 Dave Knapp – Member at Large
 Karen Brasch – President Elect

CESC Board Member Elections
 Explanation of Officer roles and duties provided by outgoing Executive Board members
for the positions they are vacating. Open positions include: President, President Elect,
and Member at Large


Nomination of future CESC board members:
President – nominations open
President Elect – Sarah Weinberger from Clark College
Member at Large – Natalie Wilkerson Tacoma Community College
CESC Executive Board will solicit a vote from the membership in the next 2 weeks.
4. CESC Tentative meeting Dates/Locations 2014-2015:
Fall
October 16th Spokane
Winter
January 22nd Lower Columbia College with optional ITV
Spring
April 16th
Joint meeting with another group – suggestions: WCTCCA, WEC

Need to find out dates of other council meetings and overlapping membership so we can
avoid scheduling conflicts
5. Executive Committee Reports:
Treasurer (Marybeth McCarthy): $2,520.11 balance
Member at Large (Dave Knapp):
 This year CESC sent out a membership reminder that was separate from the Fall
meeting reminder and this procedure seemed to work well and be less confusing for
membership
 Request from a CESC member to Dave to update the membership list currently on the
State Board website
Secretary (Kate Conant): Minutes of last meeting approved
Past President (Brian Davidson): Persistence and completion emphasis supports career services
function and this is an encouraging trend.
6. Council Liaison Updates:
Washington State Association of Student Employment Administrators (WSASEA), Diana Baker –
This group includes those who manage Workstudy programs for 2- and 4-year institutions of
higher education in the state.
 Workstudy funding is being used up around the state.
 Conference will be meeting in 2 weeks.
Disability Support Services (DSS) - recent conference in Leavenworth.
 Vice President's Council recently recommended to State Board a policy proposal that all
technology used at colleges must be accessible to all. Expect a report to go to the
commission this fall.
WEC - Meeting simultaneously at the WSSSC conference.
 Collaboration on grants, looking at systems and sources of economic data, possible
statewide use of EMSI in future?
 Possible future topic for CESC - What kind of data are we using with students, and for
program assessment?
 Possible resurgence of Woman's council - listserv active lately
7. WA State Student Services Commission (WSSSC) Liaison Update - Dennis Long, V.P. of
Student Services at Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech)
 WSSSC adopted policy recommendation that technology used on College campuses be
accessible for all constituents. Recommendation will be sent to State Board Trustees in the
September meeting
 Policy update on counting of enrollment and DOL grants. Resolution – in most cases
participants will be counted toward state support
 “Smart balanced Career College Readiness Assessment” – H.S. courses with assessments
would meet COMPASS cutoff scores – proposal to go to Instructional Council next.
 Created proposal for 1 day trainings throughout state covering Dream Act/Real Hope Act.
Training to include registration staff, Financial Aid, Advising staff, and K-12 partners, State
Board, Multi-cultural Council, Student Services Commission
 NWAC - Athletic Commissions change student eligibility and credit load requirements.
 Across the system Spring Quarter – 4 retirements and 2 promotions to Presidential
positions – concern about continuity as retirement-related openings increase

Teresa addressed Dennis Long urging continued advocacy and support for CESC from other
Councils

Dennis: 2014-2015 – College Presidents to review the council structure at meeting June 26
at Clover Park
8. State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) Liaison Update - Edward Esparza
 State Board thanks CESC members for their commitment and the work that we do in
Student Services
 Ed is leading 1079 training initiative for State Board and asks that the colleges and external
parties make the rollout a priority
o Students need to be educated about the benefit
o Staff needs to be trained
o Committee members accept and create supportive tone for students






WA Tech College Student Association – visited legislature and board of Trustees
CUSP council (Council of unions and student programs) supports students - received
leadership and legislative training
Joe Holliday will be joining the State Board as Director for Student Services. He was
previously Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success Initiatives for the Oregon University
System
Legislative Internship positions opened (2) further review before implementation
Director of Transfer Education position open at State Board. They are also staffing the
Instruction Commission position.
Students of Color conference was a fabulous growth experience and joyful celebration for
the students that attended.
9. Updates from Colleges:
 Discussion about take-aways from SSSC Conference sessions
Brian – realization that Millennials much less likely to have any work experience and
associated impacts on work maturity
 Genderbread infographic and discussion was informing
 Conference Twitter feed was a learning experience
 LinkedIn Photo booth at career events
 Tacoma Community College’s use of sales database for targeted communication to students
 CESC could develop an assessment matrix for career center tools
 Edie Blakley indicated she could give a future update about Clark CC as a pilot site for
assessment and intake processes
Addendum
Pre-session – general discussion:
 Member and participant introductions
 What Career Services do you provide and how are they structured? Representatives shared
their roles and the organizational context of their activities
 What would you like from CESC? discussion for new participants:
o I am new to Career Services - support
o In areas where a campus has duplicate services – such as Career Development I.T. tools,
some information about what works best?
o Proposal to have a session about Career Center tools.
 Question about CESC communications - do we use the CESC Linked in group?
o Brian- It is underused
o The WA State Board listserv is not going away and has the advantage that it is open
access
o Dave expressed the opinion that Mailchimp could perhaps go away?
o Discussion about changing your settings for each Linked In group
 General discussion about “Managing the Noise” – IT tools, social media use and time
management “managing your digital stream”
Also an issue for students as they receive communications from career services offices.
Differences in student and career services communication styles – text to landline messages;
student thinks they are texting a smartphone and the phone is on your desk. Have a panel for
student views on this topic?
Implications for students in communicating with employers if they are looking for work. How
to understand student view of communication?
Suggestion of having Employer, Administration, Faculty, Student panels at CESC meetings
