Washington Occupational Information System (WOIS) Presentation
Tami Palmer, Deputy Director of WOIS
o WOIS is a private organization/funded through membership subscriptions
o Started in 1974
o 33 of 34 community colleges in the system subscribe to WOIS
o Presentation followed
 Students may have a WOIS portfolio from their high school
 Can be imported into your college’s WOIS site
 Resources/Directions now included for all assessments
 Military Careers section links to related civilian jobs
 Schools can personalize “Links” (right-hand, sidebar) on the Portfolio-Main
Menu screen

o Effects of Federal Sequestration on colleges
 Affecting some (those receiving Fair Share), not affecting others
 State allotment of funding to potentially stay at current levels
 USA Funds presentation– Five different verification forms, as high as 14
 Discussion how to support students taking out loans
 Council for Basic Skills – (Megan Bryson, Bellingham Tech)
o I-Best updates/discussions
o Adult High School completion programs (21 years of age+)
 Recognize previous high school and life experiences
 Incorporate career exploration
o Basic skills classes moving to letter grade vs. Pass/Fail

How do we survive and thrive as a heterogeneous council?
Only eleven schools in attendance at today’s CESC meeting
Large group discussion followed
Ideas mentioned:
 Connect with four year schools
 Add additional “presidential” positions to share workload
 Ask Student Services Commission to require representation in CESC
o Increase group participation accountability
 CESC dissolve as an independent council and join another council
 Spur CESC members into CESC leadership roles
 Invite Testing managers (who want a council) to join CESC to combine
forces/energy
 How can SBCTC liaison better help guide/collaborate w/CESC
