MTO Colloquium Tuesday, September 30 at 12:45 hrs in WZ 103 Prof. dr. Chris Snijders (Eindhoven University of Technology) ‘Diagnosis by phone. Clinical versus statistical prediction of Actinic Keratosis and Basal Cell Carcinoma’ The literature on clinical versus statistical prediction compares how well human experts predict, compared to a (statistical or other) model that uses the same inputs. Though empirical evidence seems to favor the models, many questions remain unanswered. The presentation will consider the diagnosis of two precursors of skin cancer: Actinic Keratosis and Basal Cell Carcinoma, based on data collected at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. Our analysis shows, among other things, promising results for model based prediction. For potential patients, decent diagnoses can be achieved after answering a couple of relatively straightforward questions, which allows implementing a diagnostic tool as standard phone application.
