The decline in the number of wells drilled in 1983 was caused by a decreasedmarket for gas,which is the primary petroleumproduct of the SanJuanBasin.By mid-1983,however, the percentageof wells drilled for oil in the SanJuanBasinwas greater than in previous years; this increasedpercentage of wells drilled {or oil resulted in a stabilizationof drilling activity (Mickey,1983a, p. 28). Most of the oil wells were development wells completed in the Gallup Sands t o n e ( C r e t a c e o u s )I.n m a n y w e l l s , o i l producedfrom the Gallup is commingledwith oil produced from the Dakota Sandstone, Greenhorn Limestone, and GranerosShale (Cretaceous). Many recently completedGallup wells are located in Rio Arriba County and northeast San Juan County and are northeast of the main northwest trend of Gallup production. The main Gallup trend produces 'shaped oil from northwest-trending barsandstones.Many wells northJastof the main trend produce from sandstones that are less permeable and porous than sandstonesin ihe main Gallup trend (Reese, 1977). Developmentof fields in the main Gallup trend has also been rapid. The Northwest shelf of the Permian Basin is the third area of southeast New Mexico that was actively drilled in 1983. Three significant wildcat discoveries were made on the Northwest shelf. The Yates Petroleum Corporation No. 1 Little Cuevo Unit (Fig. 1, no. 4; Table 1, no. 4) struck gas in the Strawn Series along the west margin of the Northwest shelf. The Yates discoverv pushes westward nroduction in the Perniian Basin and could open the east flank of the Pedernal uplift to more exploration. The Amoco Production Company No. L O'Brien Ranch (Fig. l, no.2; Table 1, no. 2) found gas in Mississippian rocks. The Stevens Operating Corporation No. 1 Red Lake Ridge (Fig. 1, no. 1., Table 1, no. 1) struck gas in the Atoka Series. Development drilling was mostly for gas in the Abo "tight" gas sands (Permian) in the first half of 1983. Development drilling for oil in the San Andres Formation (Permian) predominated in the second half of 1983.Broadhead (1983a,1984a)and Scott and others (1983) reported on the petroleum geology of the "tight" Abo gas sands. Few wells were drilled on the Roosevelt uplift in 1983 and there were no significant wildcat discoveries. Chief drilling targets on the Roosevelt uplift are Pennsylvanian, Mississippian and Silurian rocks. Pitt (7973) reported on the hydrocarbon potential of prePennsylvanian rocks in Roosevelt County. ducing Gallup sandstones.Main drilling targets for San Juan Basin natural gas were the sameas in previous Years:the Dakota Sandstone in thi Basin D'akotafield and the Picrured Cliffs Sandstone in the Ballard and Blanco fields. Stone and others (1983) discussedthe stratigraphyof Cretaceousrocks in the San Juan Basin. The Gulf Oil No. L Gallo Canyon FederalStateDeep Unit (Fig. 7, no.34; Table3, no. 34)is an importantwildcat that was drilling in the San Juan Basin at the end of the year. The Gallo Canyon well is scheduled to be drilled to 12,500ft and should penetratethe Paleozoicsection. Only approximately 20 wildcat wells have tested the Paleozoicsection in the New Mexico portion of the San JuanBasin.Productionfrom Paleozoicrocks is confinedto small fields in the west part of the Basin.Therefore,the Paleozoicshould be regardedas untested frontier territory that underlies the well-developed Cretaceous section.The stratigraphyof upper Paleozoic rocks in the San Juan Basin has been summarized by Armstrong and Mamet (7977), Ientgen (1977), and Baars and Stevenson -0,9fi). Rice (1983)and Reiter and Clarkson (1983)investigatedthe thermal maturity of petroleum sourcerocks in the San juan Basln. t<. F. M. Thompson (1983)studied the origin of natural gas in the San Juan Basin. In the Acoma Basin of northwest New Mexico, the Cities ServiceCompany No. 1 SantaFe A (Fig. 1, no. 27; Table 2, no. 27) was abandonedafter penetratingthe upper Paleozoicsectionand reachinga total depth of 5,3M ft in Precambrianrocks. Wengerd (1959),Foster(1964),and Broadhead(1983b) discussedthe petroleum potential of areas adjacentto the Cities Servicewell. In the Hagan Basin of Santa Fe County, the John GianardiNo. 1 CKZ (Fig. 1, no. 19; Table2, no. 19) was abandonedafter reaching a total depthofT ,773ft; the Gianardi weII penetratederetaceous,Triassic,and Permian rocks.Also in the Hagan Basin,Pelto Oil Company is attempting to complete its No. 1 Ortiz well (Fig. 7, no.32; Table3, no. 32). which was abandoned in 1981after it recovered15 bbls of high gravlty (40'API) crude oil from Cretaceousrocks.Black(1979) discussedpetroleum exPlorationin the Hagan Basin. Martin (1983) recently reported on the O'Connell Ranchpilot. In late 1983,Solv-ExCorporationabandonedits attempt to mine and extract heavy oil from outcrops of the Santa Rosa tar sands in central Guadalupe County (Fig. 1, letter B). It was decidedthat it was not economicallvfeasible to extract oil from the tar sands ai that time. Encroachmentof water from SantaRosa Lake onto outcropsof the tar sandshas also hindered development. Budding (1979,1980) and Gorman and Robeck(L946)reported on the geologyof the SantaRosatar sands.The subsurfaceareal extent of the oil-impregnated sandstonehas not been wetl defined. Sanchez(1983)discussedthe possibleuses of micro-organismsto increaseihe extraction efficienryof oil from the SantaRosatar sands. Broadhead(1984b)studied the regional subsurfacestratigraphyand petroleum geology of the SantaRosaSandstonein northeastNe* Mexico. The Rio Petro No. 16 State (Fig. 1, no. 1.7; Table 2, no. 17), drilled in the T-4 Ranch pilot, was a wildcat GlorietaSandstone(Permian) test that was drilled to a total depth of.1,186ft. The Glorieta was wet in the well but an oil-stainedcore of the Artesia Group (Permian)was recovered (GeorgeL. Scotl, fr., personal communication 1983).An igneousdike cut out part of the G.lorietafrom approximately1,,090to 1,160ft. The not-yet-productive Raton Basin of northeastNew Mexico has been the obiect of continuedsearchfor petroleum.The Chalfont Oil & Gas No. 1Y KaiserSteel(Fig. 1, no. 28;Table3, no. 28) was scheduledto be drilled to 3,500ft to test Cretaceousrocks. Severalwells drilled in previous years have encounteredpromising shows of gas in Cretaceousrocks in the Raton Basin (Speer,1976; Broadhead, 1982), but commercial production has not been established. Woodward (1983)discussedthe occurrenceof potential fractured reservoirs in the Raton Basin. Paleozoicrocks remain virtually untested in the Basin. Amoco Production Company initiated a secondphase of development drilling in the Bravodome carbondioxide gasunit of Union, Harding, and Quay Counties, and 34 wells were drilled in 1983.The Bravodome carbon dioxide field has been unitized under Amoco'soperation.
