From December 2011 to December 2012 visits relating to sexual health content have increased by 64%. Visits spiked during October and November 2012, with visits in October being 17% higher than those recorded in September. Visits fell slightly
in December 2012 as expected due to the festive period, but past trends would suggest a significant rise again in January 2013.
The three main content areas responsible for sexual health visits are 'Health A-Z treatments and conditions', 'Live Well', and 'Common Health Questions' (CHQs). The most visited sexual health topic in Health A-Z between December 2011 and
December 2012 was chlamydia, followed by genital herpes.
Visits relating to contraception were the most popular topic for sexual health visits in the Live Well area, with the most visited form of contraception being the contraceptive implant, which over the year period had almost 170,000 more visits than
the second most popular form, the contraceptive injection. Interestingly, condoms, which are the only form of contraception that protect again both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) only ranked fifth based on visits.
The most visited sexual health CHQ between December 2011 - December 2012 was 'can I get pregnant just after my period has finished?', which saw its visits peak at 46,823 in December 2012.
