From January 2013 and January 2014 visits to sexual health content on NHS Choices increased by 70%, with 9.20% of all NHS Choices traffic being made up by visits to sexual health related pages in January 2014.
Between January to September 2013 visits remained between 2 and 3 million. During October 2013 visits rose to 3,389,681, the peak for 2013. Between October – December visits remained above 3 million. January 2014 saw visits pass the 2013 high when they a reached near to 4 million.
This was 16% higher than the peak recorded in October 2013.
The most visited area of NHS Choices for sexual health content was the treatments and conditions area of the site which not only contains detailed information about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) but is also home to the contraception guide which was launched in early 2013.
The most popular sexual health search term during January 2014 was ‘thrush’, followed by ‘chlamydia’. Visits to the related conditions pages on NHS Choices mirrored this, with visits to the ‘vaginal thrush’ page seeing the most visits at 340,145, with ‘chlamydia’ following with 230,415
visits.
Between January 2013 – January 2014 there were 325,000 starts of sexual health related videos, with the ‘female ejaculation video’ proving most popular with 59,524 starts.
