Lesson Plan #1 Orientation to Developmental Career Guidance Program Time Required: 40 minutes Content Standards: 7.2.1. Standard 4: Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions. Indicators: 7.2.1.g Students will understand the importance of planning. 7.2.2.c Students will develop and awareness of personal abilities, skills, interests. 7.2.3.a Students will develop skills to locate, evaluate and interpret career information. GOAL: The Student will develop an understanding of career guidance and the procedures and expectations as set forth by the West Virginia Department of Education (Policy 2510) and the West Virginia Department of Career and Technical Education for career education in grade 8 as well as the development of the Individual Student Transition Plan. Activity Statement: Students are introduced to a career website. Students are introduced to state requirements regarding career planning. Students are introduced to career clusters. Student label their career folder with their name and class. Materials: Career Folders for each student County/school folder on career clusters Information on Policy 2510 requirements regarding choosing a career cluster Computer lab www.cfwv.com or www.careercruising.com Procedures: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) Introduction of the career program as well as classroom (or group) rules and guidelines. Discuss the meaning of the phrase, “If you fail to plan; you plan to fail.” Review Goals of the 8th grade developmental career guidance program. Share 2510 Policy Requirements Share school/county information about career cluster Reserve computer lab and register students for account on www.cfwv.com or www.careercruising.com (site of choice at school) 7) What the program will not do: Set final career plans & a final high school schedule. It’s just a plan. 8) Distribute and start a career folder for each student. Discussion: Using questioning techniques the student will discuss their thoughts, knowledge and concerns about developing a career plan.
