INTRODUCTION
1. Relation to Tables of Damped Vibrations. The tables herewith presented are designed to supplement the Tables of Damped
Vibrations which appeared as University of Oregon Publication,
Mathematics Series, vol. 1, no. 1, March, 1929. The latter tables give
the values of u in terms of x for certain solutions of the differential
equation

together with special tables giving the values of u and x at the maxima, minima, and points of inflection. The purposes and use of the
tables are discussed in the introduction to that publication, and need
not be treated again here.
The present set of supplementary tables gives the values of
du/dx for the same solutions of (1) as are tabulated in Tables of
Damped Vibrations, so that Table XV of this publication is to be
used with Table IV of the former, and Table XVI with Table V.
2. Necessity for Tables of Derivatives. The need for a table of
derivatives to be used in conjunction with the tables already published arises from the fact that each particular solution of (1) requires two conditions for its determination. Thus for example if
the initial values of it and du /dx are given, the corresponding solution is uniquely determined but cannot in fact be found directly from
tables that give the value of u alone, since any given value of u will
occur in many places in the table. This difficulty is not encountered if
it is known that the initial point is maximum, minimum, or point of
inflection, as the special tables already published enable one to locate
the proper particular solution. The specific need for the tables of
derivatives was encountered in an attempt to apply the Tables of

Damped Vibrations to the problem of the surge tank with a throttling ring, where the differential equation controlling the water level
in the tank can be reduced to equation (1) by appropriate transformations, but where the initial point is not the point of inflection, as is
the case in the absence of the throttling ring. It is hoped that the
publication of the Tables of Derivatives will greatly extend the value
and usefulness of the Tables of Damped Vibrations.
3. Two-Way Interpolation. Since problems involving the combined use of Tables IV and XV or of Tables V and XVI will necessarily lead to a considerable amount of two-way interpolation, it
will be convenient to use a systematic method for performing such
interpolations. Among the many formulas available the one given
below is simple in operation and sufficiently accurate for most of the
tables.*
In the diagram (2) below is shown a section of a table (for
definiteness consider Table IV) in which the independent variables
are x and a, and the dependent variable is u. Let the interval between
successive entries of x be denoted by h, and the interval between suc-
cessive entries of a be denoted by k, so that x1xox2 x1 =h,

4. Simultaneous Inverse Interpolation. When values of 14, and
du/dx are given and we desire to find the corresponding values of
x and a from Tables IV and XV we encounter a sort of simultaneous
inverse interpolation which is not generally familiar. We shall therefore explain the procedure in considerable detail by means of numerical examples.

It is convenient to divide the work into steps, as follows :
First Step. Approximate location of a and x by graphic method. Turning
to Table IV for b=-0.4, we take a value of x, say x=0.7, and by ordinary linear
interpolation we find the approximate value of a at which u=0.8. In this case
we find a=0.989. Next we take x=0.8 and again find the value of a for which
u=0.8, and proceeding in this manner we obtain a table of pairs of values of x
and a for which u=0.8, thus

The coordinates of the point of intersection, which are of course the desired
values of x and a, are seen to be approximately x=0.945, a=1.165. In carrying
out the above work it is obviously desirable to do some preliminary scouting
in Tables IV and XV to see where the values of x should be chosen so that a
small number of points will locate the intersection. It is not really necessary to
take as many as were taken in the example above.
If we are not much concerned with accuracy in the third decimal place, the
values already obtained may be regarded as satisfactory and we need go no
farther. If we desire greater accuracy we may proceed as follows :
Second Step. Direct check of first approximation. We now calculate the
values of u and du/dx corresponding to x-=0.945, a=1.165, that is, corresponding to the values given by the first approximation. The discrepancy between
the values of u and du/dx thus found and the desired values u=0.8, dit/dx=0.6
will serve to indicate the error of the first approximation. The calculation is
performed by means of (4), and appears as follows :

The inverse interpolation in Tables V and XVI is quite similar,
but it must be remembered that the values of x start at the point of
inflection and that the value of u given at the head of each column

5. Table XVII. In order to provide a complete solution of the
surge tank problem the additional Table XVII has been calculated.
This table supplies values of u for the case not covered by Table V ;
namely, the case in which the level in the surge tank is falling from a
maximum following an upward surge. The initial values of u chosen
are the final values of u in Table IV, since Table XVII will always
immediately follow Table IV in the construction of a curve showing
water level plotted against time. The following examples are given
to illustrate the use of the tables in tracing the course of the surges.
In order not to divert the reader's attention from essential principles,
the numbers have been chosen so as to avoid cumbersome interpolation
rather than to represent actual engineering problems.

Let us assume that in a problem to which the tables are to be applied
we know both the initial level and the final level. It will now be
shown how the complete course of the oscillations can be traced by
means of the tables.
EXAMPLE 5. Given a surge tank installation such that P=30.5. Suppose
Ho=27.20 ft., H1 =9.75 ft.; to determine the course of the oscillations.

we continue the curve by the use of Table XVII, which we enter with the values
b=0.4, a=1.0. The value of x in Table XVII is of course measured from E. Upon
reaching the point C we return to Table IV, which we enter with the values b=0.4,
