The Iowa Conference on

Communicative Disorders provides continuing education activities in speech-language pathology that are acceptable to the State of Iowa and the

American Speech-Language-Hearing

Association. Areas of emphasis include adults and pediatrics.

The Iowa Conference on

Communicative Disorders is a student run conference for professionals. The conference is in its 24th year.

The conference co-chairs are Andrew

Tricia K. Armstrong, M.A., CLC, CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist at

Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of

Minnesota-St. Paul. She has worked at Children’s with infants and children with feeding and swallowing difficulties since 1997. She currently works with both inpatients and outpatients and the majority of her time is spent in the

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the outpatient Feeding Clinic. She is also a Certified Lactation Consultant, a certified VitalStim provider, is trained in administration of the Neonatal Oral Motor

Assessment Scale (NOMAS), and is on the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of

MN Speaker’s Bureau where she speaks to nurses and newborn nurseries in local and rural hospitals on feeding strategies for high risk feeders.

Darci Becker, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, earned her Master of Arts in Speech-Language

Pathology at the University of Northern

Iowa in 1991. During her time at the

University of Northern Iowa she served as the President of NSSLHA and also served as Chair of the inaugural Iowa

Conference on Communicative Disorders. She recently completed her 22nd year working as a speech-language pathologist at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa providing services to adults in the inpatient, acute care and rehabilitation units. In 2011, she graduated with her Ph.D. in Speech and

Hearing Science from the University of

Iowa. She has a particular interest in the area of dysphagia and received her

Board Certification in Swallowing and

Swallowing Disorders in 2010.

Paula S. Cochran, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is professor and chair of communication disorders at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. She teaches courses in language development, language disorders in children, assistive technology, and research methodology.

In her former life, she worked in Ohio as a speech-language pathologist in a wide variety of settings. She holds a graduate degree in linguistics from the

University of Cambridge, England, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

She has presented and published widely on the use of technology in communication disorders and education.

Kelly Farquharson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an assistant professor at Emerson

College in Boston, Massachusetts.

Her research interests include schoolaged children with phonological and language disorders, the effect of those disorders on the acquisition of literacy skills, and the cognitive, environmental, and academic factors that contribute to phonological and language disorders.

Prior to pursuing a research degree, she was a school-based speech-language pathologist in Pennsylvania.

Carlin Hageman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is the

Head of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Northern Iowa and the faculty advisor for the UNI NSSLHA chapter. Dr.

Hageman has previously been selected as the National Advisor of the Year,

Executive Director of NSSLHA, an Iowa

Regent’s Scholar, and an ASHA Fellow.

BIOGRAPHIES

Lemmie McNeilly, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, CAE, serves on ASHA’s Executive Team as the

Chief Staff Officer, Speech-Language

Pathology. She is a fellow of the ASHA and a Certified Association Executive of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). Previous appointments include serving as the founding chair of the department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Florida International University. Her experiences span higher education, health care systems and educational settings. Her research and clinical expertise cover the areas of language disorders and dysphagia for medically fragile pediatrics. She has published and conducted seminars internationally for leaders in health care and academic arenas on a variety of topics.

Washington University Medical Center in Washington, DC where she held several clinical and administrative positions as a speech-language pathologist and member of the medical center administration. She is an ASHA

Fellow, past president of the District of

Columbia Speech-Language-Hearing

Association, and is an American Society of Association Executives (ASAE)

Fellow. Arlene was recently recognized as one of the 2015 Top Association &

Non Profit Innovators. Arlene earned her Bachelor of Arts in biology, Master of Arts in speech-language pathology, and PhD in psychology from the George

Washington University.

Laura Murray, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, is a Full

Professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, and Cognitive

Science and Neuroscience Programs at

Indiana University. She is also an ASHA

Fellow. She teaches courses on normal aging and acquired neurogenic cognitive and communication disorders, and has received several awards for her teaching efforts at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She founded the Indiana

University Aphasia Support Group, and continues to serve as a clinical supervisor for that group. Her contributions include over 60 peer-reviewed and invited journal articles and book chapters, a graduate-level textbook, and over

180 invited and refereed conference presentations at the national and international levels in the fields of aphasia, right hemisphere disorders, dementia, traumatic brain injury, and normal aging.

Arlene A. Pietranton, Ph.D., CAE, serves as Chief Executive Officer of the

American Speech-Language-Hearing

Association (ASHA). Before working at

ASHA Arlene was on staff at The George

Laura Pitts, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an assistant professor at the University of Northern Iowa and researcher at the

Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) and the Feinberg School of Medicine at

Northwestern University. Her research interests include lingual skill training, noninvasive cortical stimulation, functional neuroimaging of swallowing recovery, and exercise-based paradigms for the rehabilitation of neurogenic dysphagia.

Erin Redle, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, has over 15 years experience as a speech-language pathologist in a variety of settings, including early intervention, schools, hospitals, and private practice. She is also an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati. Her clinical experience and research focus on children with a variety of communication and swallowing disorders and the impact of these disorders on families.

Dr. Redle has presented on these topics internationally and is the co-author of

“Communication Sciences and

Disorders: A Clinical Evidence-Based

Approach” (3rd Edition).
