Setting Up Mac OS X Mail 4.5 with a Physics Email Account
Platforms: Mac OS X 10.6

1. Launch Mail. If this is the first time Mail has been set up for use proceed to step 4. Otherwise, continue to the
next step.
2. After the main window appears, click on the "Mail" menu and select " Preferences...". The Mail preferences
window will open with the “General” preferences displayed. Click on the "Accounts" icon to display the
account settings.
3. In the lower left hand corner of the “Accounts” window click on the "+" button to create a new account.
4. Enter your “Full Name”, “Email Address”, and “Password” then click on the “Continue” button.
5. Select either POP or IMAP as the “Account Type”, enter a “Description” for the account, then enter physicsmail.ucsd.edu as the “Incoming Mail Server” and click “Continue”.

6. Make sure Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked and set “Authentication” to Password from the drop
down menu, then click “Continue”.
7. Enter a “Description”, then if you are using a computer that will remain on campus, go to step 7a. If you are
using a computer that will stay off campus go to step 7b. If you are using a computer that will be used both on
and off campus or while traveling go to step 7c.
7a. Enter smtp.ucsd.edu as the “Outgoing Mail Server” then click “Continue”.
7b. Enter your Internet Service Providerʼs “Outgoing Mail Server” then click “Continue”. You will need to
consult your ISPʼs documentation and/or website for this information. Skip to step 9.
7c. Enter smtp.ucsd.edu as the “Outgoing Mail Server” then make sure Use Authentication is checked.
Enter your UCSD Active Directory (AD) Account (*not* your Physics) “User Name” and “Password” then
click “Continue”.
8. Make sure Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked and set “Authentication” to Password from the drop
down menu, then click “Continue”.

9. After reviewing the “Account Summary” window, click on the “Create” button. If this is the first time setting up
Mail, skip to the end, otherwise continue to step 10.
10. Close the preferences window and click the "Save" button if asked to save changes.To check mail, click on
the "Get Mail" icon and enter your password if prompted.
Mail is now configured to access your Physics Email account. For assistance, please contact the Physics
