Minutes for Promotion to Full Professor – Rich Jelier Agenda item: General review of applicable criteria Discussion: FACULTY HANDBOOK: To be promoted to Professor, an Associate Professor must display consistent excellence in teaching and should have earned the Doctorate or appropriate terminal degree except in extraordinary circumstances where the evidence demonstrates that the absence of the Doctorate does not inhibit the faculty member's professional standing and performance. In addition, the person should have achieved acknowledged professional recognition through scholarship or creative activity; demonstrate professional development; and have made vital contributions to the unit, university and community. The extent of participation in these areas will be affected by a variety of factors, including the stage of the faculty member's career and the program objectives of the university. Ordinarily, at least seven (7) full time equivalent years at the rank of Associate Professor must be completed before an Associate Professor may be considered for promotion to Professor. SPNA GUIDELINES: Promotion to Professor requires a continuing record of excellence in teaching together with significant contributions to one’s discipline, profession, and community. Such contributions include, but are not limited to: peer reviewed journal articles, applied research reports for public and nonprofit agencies, a published book, completed subsequent to promotion to associate professor. All scholarship must be subject to peer review. The successful candidate for full professor will also have an established record of vital service to the university, community, and profession. Discussion: Balfour visited PA641 o seminar style o students were engaged and well-prepared o does a good job leading discussions without telling what to say Hoffman visited PA439 o student presentations, but wide participation o seminar style, good content o well-informed students o good attendance Australia study abroad – outstanding, rigorous course. A model program. Bedrock of getting our students into international education. Former director described Dr. Jelier as exemplary teacher, the bedrock of program. Always reliable. Consensus that Dr. Jelier’s teaching record is above standard. Agenda item: b. Discussion: Since winter 2001, taught 52 courses while pursuing professional achievements. Not done with course release. Current projects: o book should be out between April and June. One faculty member says book should have influence on state government and our region o conference papers being turned into book proposals; (Australia/US/UK urban planning) o service learning book proposal w/Kimoto Did the grants result in research products? o Grants led to scholarly products which were represented at multiple conferences, associations and legislators Was the research submitted to academic journals? o Some, but not successfully yet. o One with Dr. Mulendore is revise and resubmit Was the research peer reviewed? o Good feedback from Dyer Ives on neighborhood profiles o Conference proceeding was peer reviewed. o Book chapters were peer reviewed. One faculty member said that Dr. Jelier is model Grand Valley faculty. His research agenda is rooted in his community service and informs his teaching. 2 Agenda item: c.
