Models of Innovation, Sun Valley Elementary School, Video This video clip highlights a visit to see innovative approaches to learning at Sun Valley Elementary School, Monroe, NC Classroom 1 Students sound out vowels and words in Spanish, starting with vowels A-­‐E-­‐I-­‐O-­‐U. They then add the consonant “m” and “f” to the vowels, sounding out: ma, me, mi, mo, mu, followed by fa, fe, fi, fo, fu. Individual students sound out letters of the alphabet in Spanish, then use each letter in a word and phrase. Shown: R-­‐S-­‐T-­‐U R for “raton” = mouse. The mouse has a bag. S for “sapo” = toad. The toad jumps high. T for “tijeras” = scissors. The scissors are red. U for “urraca” = magpie. The magpie eats grapes. Classroom 2 Teacher plays guitar as students sing “It’s a Small World” in Tagalog, the native Filipino language. Young girl has a solo and continues to sing “It’s a Small World” but in Mandarin: “There is just one moon “And one golden sun “And a smile means “Friendship to every one “Though the mountains divide “And the oceans are wide “It's a small world after all.” All the students finish by singing in English: “It’s a small world after all; it’s a small, small, world.” (clapping) Classroom 3 Students sing “London Bridge” in part: “…bricks and mortar will not stay, will not stay, will not stay “bricks and mortar will not stay, my fair lady. “build it up with iron and steel, iron and steel, iron and steel, “build it up with iron and steel, my fair lady.”
