Winter Break
Burris begins Winter Break at the end of the day on Friday, December 16.
School will resume on Tuesday, January 3. The office will be closed on
December 26, 27, and January 2. The office will close at 3:00 p.m. on December 23 and December 30.
Storer Scholarship Applications
Deadline is February 1
Burris seniors may apply for the Oliver W. Storer Scholarship between
December 1 and February 1. All applications must be returned no later than
February 1. Winter break would be a great time to complete this application.
See Mrs. McLaren in the main office.
Safety Notice
After speaking with the city engineer - Stan Hyatt - about
student safety, we are reminded that several drivers continue to
disregard proper student drop-off and pick-up areas at Burris.
On University Avenue, the only drop-off and pick-up area is:
the parking lot directly across the street.
Enclosures: Lunch Menus, Parent
Survey, Fresh Ideas for Education
Sign-up Form
On Gilbert Street, the drop-off and pick-up areas are:
the parking lot on the corner of Gilbert and Nichols and the
west-bound lane on Gilbert.
Mr. Hyatt asked that we distribute warnings to parents who
violate proper student drop-off and pick-up procedures and
contact university and city security for their support.
The official Burris calendar is
located on the web at
www.dynacal.com/Burris

From the Nurse. . . .
THE COLD FACTS
Colds cause 22 million lost school days per year in the US.
Children get 6 to 10 colds per year, probably due to poor hygiene and proximity to other
children.
More than 200 different viruses cause the common cold.
When sneezed out or transferred by hand, these germs can live outside the body for up to 3 hours.
Colds are the most common trigger of asthma attacks in children and often are the prelude to ear infections.
Teach your children to wash their hands often and if they show symptoms of illness, keep them home.
From Mrs. Genova’s Classes. . .
World Literature-Freshmen participated in a Socratic seminar to analyze the novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell.
For real-life application, students completed various projects. They: designed their own companies, including an
employee hierarchy, pay scale and mission statement; examined the Burris Mission Statement/Burris Behavior
guidelines and rewrote the rules; or created dioramas depicting an important scene. Now, we are on to the
Renaissance, Shakespeare, and Romeo and Juliet. American Literature-Sophomores examined Huck Finn and the
issue of racism. They examined the arguments for censoring/retaining Huck Finn (both sides), citing examples and
sources. Students came to their own conclusions as to whether or not the book was racist and defended their
conclusions. Speech-Students created storyboards and video public service announcements to be aired on the public
access channel. Poetry-Students have visited different environments in our experiments in place, for example, the
orchid garden in Christy Woods. They are encouraged to draw from the different settings to write poems. Poems will
be placed in the green house. Furthermore, haikus will be posted in 30 Mits busses. Additionally, students are working
on compiling poetry and artwork for a literary magazine.
Personal Ad - Yearbook
Request for Yarn
Watch for an upcoming mailing from the high
school yearbook staff regarding personal/
senior ads in the 2006 edition of the Balance.
The deadline is December 2. Anyone may
place a personal ad, however, senior’s
parents often choose to submit a baby picture
to accompany their congratulations on their
accomplishment. If the photo you choose to
submit is precious, bring the photo to Room
123 and the staff will scan the image while
you wait.
Do you have leftover yarn from knitting or
crochet projects? Did you inherit a box of
yarn from “Great-Aunt Bessie”? Would you
like to be rid of the extra yarn, but just don¹t
know what to do with it? Beginning and
Enrichment Spanish students will put your
glut to good use during our Spring Semester
cultural activities. We will be making Ojos de Dios and trying
some traditional Guatemalan weaving. Please ask your student to
deliver your surplus yarn to Sra. Keever in Room 228 or 230.
Thank you in advance!

Variety Show
Dust off those old top hats and canes and get your act
ready for the second annual Burris Variety Show. The
date is February 23 in the Burris Auditorium. More
information will be coming with audition dates and
times. What a fun way to raise money for the May
Term Scholarship fund.
It’s Beginning to
Sound a Lot Like
Christmas!
The 1st through 4th grade music
classes have been working hard on
preparing the music for their
Christmas concert. The concert will
be held Tuesday, Dec. 13th, at 6:30
in the Burris auditorium. The
program is centered around the
twelve days of Christmas, and it is
filled with some great music and fun
times. We’re sure that you will enjoy
it!
Don’t miss out on this fun and
exciting way to begin your holiday
season! If you have questions,
contact Dr. Lamb at 285-2158 or at
cglamb@bsu.edu.
Library News
The Burris library is a busy place this year. Students are reading for pleasure
as well as for information. The Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) program,
sponsored by the Association for Indiana Media Educators, provides K-5
students with an opportunity to enjoy some excellent books from a selected
list. Middle school students also have a list of their own YHBA titles from
which to choose. In April, participating students will vote for their favorite
book from the list.
Burris students may take “Reading Counts” computer quizzes over all the
YHBA books, as well as many other titles available in the library. Passing a
Reading Counts quiz entitles students to earn “Book Bucks” which may be
redeemed for prizes at the Book Bucks store in the library. The store is a
popular place to find books, bookmarks, pencils, small toys, calendars, and
other items. Donations of new or gently used items to the Book Bucks store
would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Mrs. Carr in the library if you
have questions or would like to donate items.
Do you have CHORES that we could do?
Habitat for Humanity May Term students are building a house! We are working between November 1 and next May to
raise money for materials for the house. We will be traveling south in May 2006 to an area affected by the Gulf Coast
hurricanes and donating two weeks of hard labor to the effort. Please help our project.
We’ll do your chores! In the fall we’ll rake leaves, pick up sticks and branches, and do
other outdoor services to help you get ready for winter. You can donate what you think is
fair - and all proceeds will be used for the Habitat project. Hiring us is a win-win outcome.
You get chores done, we get money to buy materials, and a homeless family on the Gulf
Coast gets a house! Contact Burris High School at 285-1131. Just leave a message with the
office before 3:00 describing the work you’d like to have done, your phone number, and a
date you’d like to have the work done by. We’ll get back to you the same day.

Pop Tabs Collected
The Burris Key Club continues to collect pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. The club goal
this year is collect at least 80,000 pop tabs, up from 50,000 last year. The Ronald McDonald
House serves families whose children require care at an Indianapolis-area hospital, by offering the
families a home-like atmosphere where they can get rest and still be near their child. Money
generated from recycling pop tabs helps cover expenses and maintenance of the house. 1,000 tabs
equal one pound, 1,000 pounds equal one million tabs. We have Ronald McDonald House pop
tab boxes available, ask any Key Club member. A Pringles’ can holds about 1,000 pop tabs. The
national goal is one billion pop tabs and you can help us reach that goal!! Thanks!! --- Burris Key
Club Members
Campbell’s Soup Labels
Please continue to send in Campbell’s soup labels. With your donations we have been able to
order several items for teachers (at no cost!), and we hope to fill several other wish lists. During
November, December, and January Campbell’s cream soups, gravies, and Swanson broths are
worth double points! Labels can be turned into the collection can in the cafeteria or to Mrs.
Turner’s mailbox in the Burris office.
Other Opportunities to Help Your School
We are still participating in these other ways to earn items or cash for the school. Please remember to support Burris when shopping at
Meijer, Marsh, and Target and buy these products.

Counseling Center Announcements
In case you’ve missed News In A Flash on Burris Channel 61: The weekly Counseling Center announcements are
posted on our website. Also listed is scholarship information via the monthly Senior Bulletins.
Twenty-first Century Scholars Program: The Twenty-first Century Scholars Program enrolls income-eligible 7th and
8th grade students. Students in the program pledge to remain drug, alcohol, and crime free; graduate from an
accredited Indiana high school with a grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; and apply on time for college
admission and financial aid. In return, students who keep this pledge receive a tuition award from the state of Indiana.
The Scholars program offers more than just tuition. It also provides tutoring, parent activities, college visits and career
information designed to encourage students to stay away from drug- and alcohol-related activities and pursue higher
education. Twenty-first Century Scholars program applications are available in the Counseling Center. The deadline is
June 30, 2006.
Summer Programs (aka Alternative Summer Break): We are beginning to receive information about summer programs
offered at various institutions throughout the country. These additional learning opportunities tend to be offered for
students as young as 6th grade and as old as 12th grade. Summer program subjects vary greatly, as do the fees for
participating. Many of the more expensive summer programs may offer scholarship opportunities for those with
demonstrated financial need. Most universities host summer programs within various departments, so if you are
interested in a particular field, check out university websites to see what they have to offer. If an alternative summer
break is something that you are interested in, please visit our website (www.bsu.edu/burris/guidanceoffice/
guidanceoffice) and click on the Summer Programs 2005 link. Although this is the list from last summer, it may provide
you a starting point in determining what kind of programs you wish to explore. It is likely that the same programs will
be offered during summer 2006.
Financial Aid Information Night: College Financial Aid Night will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at 6:30
p.m. in the Burris Auditorium. This presentation is hosted by the Counseling Center. Seniors and their parents are
encouraged to attend. Judy Nichols, a financial aid professional from Ball State University, will be going over the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and answering questions related to financial aid in general.
College Goal Sunday: Financial aid paperwork can be complicated. Fortunately, through College Goal Sunday you
can receive free assistance completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). It will be held at the
Southside High School cafeteria on Sunday, February 12, 2006, beginning at 2:00 p.m. For more information, call
1-800-992-2076 or visit www.collegegoalsunday.org. Many parents find it helpful to attend both the Financial Aid
Night presentation and College Goal Sunday.
www.Positive-Choices.org: Students who wish to participate in the program will make the Positive Promise at
www.Positive-Choices.org. Participating high school students are eligible to win one of five college scholarships to be
awarded in May 2006. Deadline to register on the website is April 30, 2006. The local sponsor of this program is
Meeks Mortuary.
College Admissions Exams: Juniors should now be thinking about the dates that they will be taking the SAT and/or
ACT this spring. Although students are registered automatically through the Counseling Center for the PRACTICE
tests (PLAN, PSAT), they must register on their own for the actual college admissions tests. It is not too early to
register now! For SAT dates and registration, go to www.collegeboard.com. For ACT dates and registration, go to
www.act.org. All juniors should have taken at least one of these tests by June 2006.
December/January, 2005-06
Owl Hoots - Page 6
Counseling News continued . . . .
PSAT and PLAN Test Results: Earlier this year, voluntary sophomores and all juniors took the PSAT (practice SAT) in
October and all sophomores took the PLAN (practice ACT) in November. When practice test scores are mailed to us,
we will make an announcement asking students to come to the Counseling Center to pick up their test scores, as well as
support materials that explain results and answers to test questions. Parents should be aware that we will return the
original test books to students. This allows students to practice both the questions they missed and those they correctly
answered. It is expected that students will share the test results with parents and hoped that parents will encourage their
students to use these materials as study resources for college admissions exams. Also, the PLAN test has valuable
career interest inventory information as well as suggested career clusters based on sophomores’ survey responses.
While no exact dates are available, it is likely that PSAT scores will be returned to us by mid-December and PLAN
scores will be returned to us by the end of January 2006. Please follow up with your children to see if they have picked
up their practice test scores when they become available.
Please contact Mrs. Maugherman at 285-2341 or jmaugher@bsu.edu with any questions.

To: All of our students and parents
The 8th grade class is collecting inkjet cartridges as a fundraising project again this year. This will directly
benefit the 8th grade trip, not to mention the environment.
Here is what the Empties4Cash program is about:
•
The empty inkjet cartridges that we usually throw away as trash can be recycled and remanufactured.
•
Bring those empty cartridges to school and put them in one of our collection boxes.
•
Our school gets paid up to $4.00 for each empty inkjet cartridge that has a print head, regardless of the
brand or type.
•
We need OEM inkjet cartridges that have print heads from all of the following brands of printers:
ƒ
HP
ƒ
Brother
ƒ
Lexmark
ƒ
Dell
ƒ
Xerox
ƒ
Apple
ƒ
Compaq
ƒ
Canon
No Epson print cartridges can be accepted, since the Epson cartridges are just ink tanks without a print head.
Remember :
•
Put the cartridge in the original box that you would have thrown away after it has been replaced to keep
it safe from damages and spills, or a Ziploc bag.
Want to Save Money on Cartridges and Help Us Raise More Funds?
InkSmile.com sells replacements cartridges that can save consumers up to 80% over brand name cartridges.
Their 5% Rebate Program allows consumers to have 5% of their purchases donated to the school who is a
participating E4C member.
Thank you in advance for helping us raise funds and keeping millions of pounds of cartridges out of
our landfills.
