The art room is buzzing with all of the projects and activities the students are currently working on. The kindergarten and first grade students have been working with colors, mixing them, making new ones and using their new creations in their projects. I don’t want to give away our trade secrets; the students love to surprise you with the work when they finish! The second through fifth grade students are finishing their unit on art of the United States and will be moving on to make some artwork inspired by the Caribbean soon. This will be an exciting project in printmaking, and I will also be adding a service project as a part of this unit. As soon as I have confirmed the details of this project, I will send them along in one of the weekend editions of the Owl news. I want to take this opportunity to again share my grading criteria for grade K-3. Students are now receiving a weekly score of a 1, 2, or 3. I have gone over these with the students explaining to them that a score of 2 or 3 means that they are working on skills or having a successful week and either is an acceptable score. If they receive a score of 1 for the week, I have probably already discussed the reason with them and given direction for improvement. This could result from a rough day in class, being actively uncooperative with their table group, using materials and/or tools incorrectly or in an unsafe manner, consistently not listening to and/or following directions or a general lack of progress on their project after repeated reminders. I know many of you have had concerns about the percentages, which show up when these scores are entered in PowerSchool. Those percentages do not reflect an accurate picture of the work your students are doing and I would ask you to disregard them. I would ask you to look at a “1” as “Improvement Needed,” a “2” as “Working on Skills” and a “3” as “Satisfactory Progress.” Please let me know if you have any further questions about this system. I previously sent a message to 4th and 5th grade parents outlining the new procedure I am using with those classes for a bi-weekly progress report. So far, the students are embracing the report and really responding with a very accurate view of how they are performing in class. As they complete the Comic Strip project they are working on, I will enter the project grade in PowerSchool as well. Please see the special announcement in this edition of the Owl Hoots from the A.I.M. (Arts In Motion) committee about our arts celebration on April 16, 2015 where the student work I have been keeping will be on display at Burris! Thank you, Stacy S.
